I was thinking of either a new 30D,
to go with my EF L lenses.

OR a new S5,
coz of a 12X & IS

as i do travel a bit for leisure and work, liked to have something sophisticated and with sufficient zoom power. Yet not bulky to carry about

Please tell me, what you hate or liked about the S5 ?

thanks in advance for the feedback.

I recently bought the S5 and while it's a nice camera I would go for the 30D if I were you. The S5 does a lot of things but none of them exceptionally well. It's a point-and-shoot and will never be a DSLR. The location of the SD card in the S5 simply drives me insane. Whoever it was at Canon who came up with the idea to put it where it is needs to be publicly flogged.

After a lot of research I bought an S5 a week ago and have been learning its pros and cons ever since. Just after I bought it the full review came out at Dpreview and there were no surprises: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonS5is/

The main thing I like is the 12x IS zoom without having to carry a heavier, expensive SLR and bag of lenses - been there, done that.

The negatives mentioned are no big deal for me. As long as it holds up, the combined battery/card lid is something that I soon got used to. The CA and highlight clipping is indeed visible on 100% crops but most can be taken care of by exposing for highlights and would not be obvious if you are just making images for the web or prints up to, say, 11x14.

One has a huge amount of control over almost every aspect of this camera's operation, so an experienced photographer can customize settings to his/her liking very easily.

Here are a couple of my first test shots, of a house finch and a dying seagull, showing the value of a built in megazoom for wildlife shots. What else can I say?

Those are both great photos. I especially love the seagul one, the eddy currents in the water around it, add to the image. And as have been said before when not pixel peeping the s5/s3 really all of the ultra zooms preform well.

Manual or semi-auto functions, YES. I liked this also, and I am very comfortable w my A620 - except the zoom lens.

I read the DpReview last evening. The only complain is (as usual) not having a wider lens at the short end of the zoom. Really really can use this as a build in function, rather than another accessory.

anyone else to share their opinions ?

:-)

I think you would benefit most from the 30D, for you already have the 620 which is a nice compact!

If the battery/sd card combo door bothers you, use Nimh batteries and the USB 2.0 wire. You will hardly ever have to open the door.

Don't forget that the S series have excellent video capabilities.

Thats the delima for me.

The S5 is 1/2 the price of 30D body, but I was hoping for something a bit more portable and with lesser stuff to carry about .... the 12X IS zoom lens looks handy .

if it is a red-ring, I'd be more happy....

If that's all that appeals to you, then get the S3 for even cheaper. Heck, do that then buy a minorly used 30D off here for under a grand or a 20D. If we're talking money problems.
