Palladium, they all look great...very sharp. Was the fifth pic just as sharp and in focus?

That's the only combo I can think of that yields 420mm at f/4.0. That body and that lens must focus like lightning! ;)

Were you on AI Servo with center AF point setting? Did you apply AI Servo sensitivity and/or AF expansion?

Palladium,

Nice series, nice exposure, nice focus, but allow me to contribute a bit of "rain on your parade".

Of all the shots, the only potential "keeper" in the series is the last one, and on that one, your timing is just a hair too late, as his arms partially obscure his face. This is exactly the problem with holding down the shutter and hoping burst mode catches "The shot".

This series is a perfect example of how much can happen between shots of a burst - even one at 10.5 fps. The ball went from being out of frame to being in the receiver's hands. BAM!

More advisable is to shoot with both eyes open (to where you can see the ball in flight through your open eye) and time your shot.

Be careful of falling in love with 10.5 fps, and not learning how to become a better photographer by learning how to actually time the shots.

I'm also interested in your experience with AF point expansion, since every time I've tried this it hasn't worked as well as simple center point.

The shots below taken after sunset last night at the Bears camp. Horrible lighting, and a million people on the sidelines AND on the field AND even credentialed photogs kept on the running track surrounding the field. All the non-rostered rookies and injured plauers hang around all over the field...challenging to say the least - you can see one of these guys in the second shot, ruining a decent capture. Number 47, rookie CB Tim Mixon, was one of 10 or so players just spectating, on the field, in the backfield.

Checking the weather - I did notice it was raining in shy-town the last few days.

revisiting this thread - this was the very 1st burst with this camera - checking the file numbers the last image was the 205th on this body. The 1st 200 were about the house ;)

Do they let you just walk on the field and take pictures? I might have to stop by Hofstra and take a few.

Swag,

I can't comment on any other camp than the Bears, but no, you can't just "walk on the field and take pictures". Credentialed photographers are kept back 20 yards or so from the sidelines, behind a yellow line painted on the turf. The general public is kept farther behind this area, and folks are either at ground level (standing or some sitting in lawn chairs) or in numerous small bleachers erected around the facility.

At the stadium, where the every-other-day evening scrimmages are held, the public is kept in the grandstands or outside the perimeter of the field, and credentialed photogs are kept no closer than the running track surrounding the football field.
