First kids portrait

A coulple asked me to do some black and whites of there 2 kids.
Would these work?

I like both pictures however to me the first one is a little dark. I would lighten it up just a touch. I am by no means a pro so take my comment with a grain of salt.

What lens did you shoot these with?

Think it was my Canon 50mm 1.8 or else my sigma 24-70mm 2.8
