Trying a new b&w method... I know the highlights are gone on this one, didn't have a flash with me, so I had to work with the lighting I had. I thought the b&w contrast here is good though... comments?

I used the CALCULATIONS method in PS and used red and green channels.

Given the no flash situation, it looks OK to me. Think about some ways you could have bounced some light in there without a flash!

I think your blacks could be richer. Have you tried doing this - duplicate layer. Then layer hue/saturation. Set this layer to color. Then another layer hue/saturation. Bring saturation all the way down.
Now you can play with selective color layers and the channel mixer. I think you'll find you can richer black and whites.

Thanks, I will experiment with that.

Apart from the blown highlights, the contrast looks good to me.

I experimented with this a bit and could not really get anything I was happy with.
