It is a beautiful sunset.

To my eyes, it needs to be rotated a couple degrees counter clockwise. - But that is an easy fix.

The real shame is the vegetation cluttering up the lower 1/3 of the shot. If you are really good with the clone stamp, you might be able to fix it. What would make that so hard, though, is not obliterating the ripples in the water. Might need a combination of clone, with gradient, with ocean ripple filter. Would be a tough job, and likely will be substandard results.

Best bet, if you can, is to shoot it again, this time moving a little to the left, to get those out of the field of view.

But an important lesson is learned here: The viewfinder is for more than just the subject! Get in the habit of looking all over the frame, rather than just at the subject. When you learn to do that, your ratio of keepers to trashers will improve greatly.

I understand your rotating ideas. It does look a bit cock eyed. I purposely included the vegetation on the bottom, as leading lines into the rest of the image, but you never know, maybe an empty bottom of the frame would be interesting as well.

I would say take the vegetation out of the photo, other then that I like it.

if you want that stuff in the foreground, maybe use a little bit of flash to give it a little contrast/make it distinguishable...

for this shot here, cropping it out and focusing on the simplicity of the image might be a better option though.

With hindsight maybe a lower shooting position would remove the dead space in the middle you refer to.

I agree with Mr B Snappy-keep the reeds by kneeling down.

Also, I've been playing with a 5x8 crop ratio combined with rule of thirds. It's an odd size but it gives some really nice results.
