I did a search and I can't find a similar thread, so if this has been done to death, I'm sorry.

As the mom of 4 girls, I am beginning my journey in getting the little darlings married off. We would like to start to interview photographers. How far in advance are you booked? What questions should I ask? What makes you better than the photographer who has the biggest yellow page/theknot.com ad? Do you really "get what you pay for"?
Thanks all
Kim who only knows a little about sports photography and nothing about portrait work.

To answer your questions...

1.8-12 months, usually
2.Ask about contracts, cancellations, print pricing, ability to let family easily order prints (Pictage, etc.). Whatever concerns you.
3.Our work.
4. Most of the time, but there's more than a few that jack their prices up just "because they can". Ask to see complete weddings, albums, and contracts.

Yes.

It would probably be a good idea to hire someone with a modicum of experience, adequate equipment, and, last but not least, some talent. Check their website, ask for sample albums, and ask a lot of questions. If the person conducts him or herself as a professional and displays good work from several weddings, you probably have a winner. You need to find someone whose vision is compatible with your own, also. That's one of the most important things.

People hire me because i'm pretty dang good what I do, my prices are reasonable, my albums are great, and they like me - don't discount that last factor it's very important that the customer gets on with the photographer. I don't like it so much if i'm hired by the parents, I prefer to meet the B&G, though I make exceptions for people who're overseas. Either way I have a contract with the B&G, not the parents, and payments come through them. The person I take instructions from on the wedding day is the bride, then the groom, after that others like the MOB/MOG might get a look-in.
