I was going to ditch this photo altogether, but decided there had to be a winning shot in there somewhere. I've agonised over how to "photoshop" it and come up with heaps of different variations.

This is the one I like the most so far...What do you ppls think?

And just because I know you're going to want to see the original...here it is... (damn thing!)

I like the photo, the 3rd one to me looks the best due to the darker blue water.

I like the first one but I'm wondering about a tighter crop. It's OK in the horizontal but maybe something narrower in the vertical with the bird and the water trail in the lower third of the frame? I think the closer you crop vertically the more of a sense of "movement" you'll get from left to right. Curious to see the results.

maybe try an interesting crop?

or if nothing else, maybe crop it so that the duck/bird is swimming/paddling a line that follows rule of thirds?

I would also lose the bubbles that shoot upward from the line of swimming...a bit distracting. maybe clone that out?

Okay. Thanks guys. I'll try a tighter crop.

Keep the contrast and color of 3 just loose the hot spot in the lower right corner. You eye always travels to the bright spot in an image. Its competing wit hyour subject. Otherwise I like the crop you have.

Hmmm. I like that crop, but I fancy I might just add a bit more at the top and just a "little" bit more at the bottom. I'll have to try it tomorrow. I dropped my beloved IBM M series keyboard today and I'm madly trying to find a replacement so I don't have to type on this $15 piece of crap any more.

My next keyboard is likely going to be this one :

can't recommend the logitech g15 enough. many many programmable keys, wonderful for shortcuts within photoshop. also has an illuminated keyboard for those late nights of processing.

much better!

might still want to think about cloning out that extra foam on the top...a bit distracting from the flow of the shot.

That's a nice keyboard...both of them. But when you've typed on an IBM 'M' series, you find it hard to change. I'll just get another one...there's plenty of second hand ones around and I think you can buy new versions from www.pckeyboard.com or www.clickykeyboard.com

That's not foam. It's the wake from the duck. I think the low angle I took the shot from makes it look like foam. I kinda like it though. Might make the image look a little too stark if I take it away don't you think?

Meaty0, I like the image over all. the 3rd edit is the best in regards to colour etc but you have to much space.

this is how I would edit the photo.

BTW interesting file name, where was this shot taken?

Thanks Mark...I have so many different ideas to try now...I can hardly wait to get my computer back online. It has "issues" at the moment (and I still haven't got my new keyboard yet).

I like that crop you did too. FYI it was taken at the most southerly tip of Lake Wakatipu near a place called Kinloch (Almost directly opposite Glenorchy).

well lets hope you get it back and soon. nothing worse that being with out a computer. :) I couldn't live with out mine.

when I was figuring out how I was going to crop the photo I just remember placing the duck to the left of the centre. since it's more interesting to see where it has come from. However having some room top and bottom seem to make it more even. we don't need to see the full trail of the duck. the biggest thing to figure out was if the white to the bottom right added something to the photo or not. to me it breaks the blue of the water, and it's a complete contrast to it.

well that's what I was thinking about the photograph anyway.

yes the south island is a great place to take photos. Only been down there once. should head back there one day.
