View Full Version : Photography = Addiction?

Well, as some of you may know I just got my G3 two weeks ago. I've always been interested in photography, but would you consider it to be addictive? I mean we all want to take great shots but if you use extra hardware (lens, filters, tripod, ect..) in conjunction with your camera it makes taking better looking pictures a lot easier.

Within the last 2 weeks I paid (Canadian Dollars)
- $500 Canon G3
- $115 Sandisk Ultra II 256MB
- $45 Leather Camera Case
- $40 Short Courses Book for Canon G3
- $25 Flash Clip
- $25 Extra 1600mAh Battery

For a total of $750 :o and I still want more :?

I know my list is nothing compared to some of you guys but I wasn't expecting to spend another $250 more in such little time I've owned the camera. How have you coped with your addiction? :P

What? I don't have a problem...

I coped by buying as much stuff as I could before getting married last Feb.

after that, the clamp went down. :(

statistically speaking, you will spend about $3,000-6,000, and then you still will want more. that's your destiny, don't fight it.

First, it's just a hobby, second, I balance it with food, shelter and other hobbies...

$10 for food, $10 for photography... $10 for shelter, $10 for photography... and so on...

This works out very well... Though sometime I sneek in an extra $10 into the food section for crisps...

$750.00?

Wow,. I can't even find a lens I like for that low low price!

(kidding... but not far from the truth)

The scariest thing about it is this.. IT GETS EASIER!

I labored over the "10D decision" for nearly three years!!!! (YES! It started out as the "D30 Decision"... which a year later became "The Belabored D60 Decision"... another year and eventually I was faced with "The Deal Maker 10D Decision"... third times the charm )

So three years to make that initial $1,500.00 investment... in the SAME year following.. it turns out I spent nearly.... nope,. I can't even say it!

Anyways.. many times that amount.. many many many times that amount.

It just keeps getting easier.

I suggest you return your camera while the 30 day period isn't over and buy the REBEL

Otherwise you'll remember my words, when in 2 months you realise that you need a dSLR with interchangeable lenses. But it will be too late to take it back!

[ghostly voice]You'll remember my words[/ghostly voice]

BTW: Buy a respectable tripod which costs AT LEAST a hundred bucks. Don't get the cheap one

The man has a point.

I really struggled with the justification of buying a 10D to compliment my EOS 33. Took ages, and finally I bought it. £1250 with a 256Mb card.

A month later I bought the 100-400L for about the same money as the 10D.. that was a lot easier.

Spending more on a flashgun that I ever had on a camera before my 10D.... well the 550ex is good...

It gets easier. I now have the 17-40L 100mm macro Tamron 28-75 and many CF cards, batteries etc. I fact I reckon my accessories alone come to more than £500.

Even now, skint, about to move house, I am feeling the need for a 70-200 F2.8L

You know what? Your probobly right I would like to get a rebel but I bought the camera used for a good price. I want to get my feet wet first and with a G3, it still can take decent shots (even more so with addon's). I'm just a beginer so I just want to have fun with the G3 for now 8)

My addiction also began with the G3. Evil little camera. Then I found this forum. It's been all downhill for my bank account ever since. I've spent a bunch of money (see sig below) in the last six months. I'm trying to reign it in but like CDS said it just keeps getting easier. Now I'm off to go eat some mac & cheese.

I know this feeling all too well. I don't think of spending $1200 on a lens that big a deal any more. It was odd, this last order totalling a palty $320 thru B&H. It is in stark contrast to the orders I have made in the past such as...
Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX
Canon 16-35mm F2.8L
Canon 24-70mm F2.8L
In that order.

Don't worry. I am on my way.

Now, without selling the S1 IS I got the Rebel. Plus circular polarizer and 2 ND filters.

The next thing I am thinking of is 512 card and lenses of course.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP! :(

Fortunately for you, you'll find a big support groug right here in this forum. Nothing we'll be able to do about it to help you (since we're in the same boat) but you can type all you want about your addiction and we'll read it and provide moral support such as "Wow, you got a 100-400L? Congrats. Now all you need is that 500L for a really nice and sharp picture with an up-close-and-personal touch".

I have my own approach:

I make up a cardboard sign that says, "Will work for lenses. Please help." I stand on the median strip at major intersections and do my best to look forlorn (not difficult). So far, I've only gotten a half eaten sandwich that way, but I remain hopeful.

I think you'd do better if you started washing windshields on cars as they wait for the stoplight. You'll have to use the rocket blower first, to remove all road debris so that you don't scratch the glass. Then use a gently moistened microfiber cloth and wipe the window clean from center to edge.

You may get better results if you offer the customer a large lens cap for their windshield. Just explain how it will keep bugs and dirt off the glass, thus making it easier to see through.

I had some good laughs reading this thread.
I have spent about $1450 on this new hobby and my folks just don't understand "why in the world you need a new digital camera, we got you one for your graduation!" (That was the Canon IXUS). Well, if they hadn't bought me that camera I would maybe never have gotten into this hobby at all! So it's all their fault... :P

Same here, with the laughs...but it hurts as well..as it is so close to the truth.

Lets see, in 2000, I just had to get the Nikon 990 which was $1600 Canadian  . That camera held until this year when I saw a DRebel going for $1400 in the local photo shop. Needles to say, the owner likes me now more then ever. It never ends.....

I was wondering why you said the flashclip was $25, but now I get it. You're canadian.

Ok for the topic. If you people think you're spending a lot: there are people that spend anywhere from $2000 to $8000 for a snowmobile or a 4 wheeler. And then they have to get a second or third one of each! These are just expensive toys too. My dad's friend just bought his son a new quad that was probably $4-6000. One of my friends had their dad buy them $2800 worth of camera. As for me, I've probably gotten $1200 or so, most of which was for a piece of crap video camera and getting that fixed. (don't buy electronics on ebay folks)

GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN! I say...

One day they'll find me curled up in a fetal position on the living room floor surrounded by the opened B&H boxes with packing peanuts scatterd all 'round... an EF 300mm f/2.8L IS wrapped in one arm like a giant milk ba-ba... and clutched firmly in the other shaking hand an open bottle of "Eclipse" lens and sensor cleaning fluid held a scant 9/32nds of an inch from my nose...

Get out... while you still can.....

I bought it off ebay, it also came with a mini tripod too. Just do a search on ebay you'll find tons to choose from.

Since this thread is alive again I'll add a Raynox DCR-1850PRO and a Telephoto & DCR-720 Wide-Angle lens to my list :p
