As some of you know from one of my other wacky posts, I'll be vacationing for a week in Washington DC the week of August 20th through the 24th.
For those who would like to meet up, if only for an hour or so, pick a day during that week and let's shake hands. (Be sure you've washed thoroughly within the past day or two please ;) )

Is the afternoon or evening of the 24th too late? Not sure whether your date range includes your travel time or not. You driving or training?
MDJAK

hah, that's funny. I'm trying to figure out what you mean by "training." I thought you meant, like, practicing. Doh!!
Yes, I am driving, arriving early afternoon of the 20 and leaving probably after breakfast on the 24th.

I'm a firefighter in Washington. Where are you staying at, I may be able to give you some ideas of sites to visit.

Hmm, perhaps you want to know where I'm staying so you can rob my L glass from my hotel room.:lol:
Embassy Suites at the convention center. I'll be there on Monday. I'm having security in the lobby so my throngs of followers here and elsewhere don't camp out for autographs. ;)

I'm sure you will be doing all the normal tourist stuff but make sure you go to some of the monuments after dark. Beautiful shots are available on clear nights.

Amazingly since I moved from DC to southern maryland it never rains. I see the news and all the rain N.VA and DC get and we havn't had rain in a month. It's really making me mad.:)

Less rain = more fires! Er, which is bad for us, good for you?
Wish I could make it, by some turn of fate half (2) our department (4) will be on vacation next week. I'd have to think of some really twisted medical ailment if I were to take the day off.

Did we decide anything? I can make it any day as long as I can get there by bus. It should be good weather.

If you guys want to meet at the Mall somewhere, we can have a few hours at the WW II memorial. Great shooting there.

Mark, be careful driving down here on Monday. Forecast is thundershowers for Monday and Tuesday. I myself am driving back to NYC from Maryland on Monday after a 6 week stay here, I think I may have to leave earlier on Sunday while it's sunny.

Hey Suzy! Yes maybe I would have come, but I didn't log on for quite some time at POTN after my asthma incident. I laid down the camera and poured myself into making this summer grand for my son and his same-aged cousins. It is just recently that I have moved back into photography, and logging on here (and the other usual sites that I go to). Anyway, I will be back here again soon, I do hope we can get something together. By the way, I will be biking the Mt. Vernon Trail tomorrow, if by any chance any POTN'r will be along the path, speak up please :)

Oh well. Still, is anyone meeting Mark on Monday?

As Suzie suggested the WWII Memorial is a great place to link up...what time?

Sorry I haven't been back to this thread in a while.
Yes, we are leaving New York on Monday morning, expecting to arrive DC at around 3 or 4. We will be checking into the hotel at 4, Embassy Suites at the convention center.
One of the main things my wife wants to visit is tht WWII Memorial, so that will be fine.
Pio (BottomBracket) has reported thundershowers expected Monday and Tuesday.
Should we wait until Wednesday? I've got a tour of the capital bldg. arranged on Tuesday morning, and I think I have VIP tickets waiting for the Holocaust museum Wednesday morning.
If it's not raining, how about 6 or 7 pm Monday at WWII Memorial?
I'm pretty flexible, so just let me know. My wife (Dorothy) also wants to see the Museum of the American Indian (or is it Native Americans?)

Malone claims to have a job. What a bunch of nonsense. Remember that TV show a while back with some robotic head? I forget the name. I think Malone doesn't really exist.
He wants to meet me at night. Yeah, right, so he can mug me.
Wonder if he's buyin' dinner?

Malone may be working, but meeting at 9 a.m., I would think some people could go in late that day or something. Oh well. I'm bringing my two boys and heading to the Spy Museum after we break up. It'll be a great day.

Well, we had an awesome day today. Started out walking from our hotel, which is on 10th, Embassy Suites, all the way to the Hart Senate office bldg for a staff tour of the Capitol, followed by Library of Congress, lunch, Museum of the American Indian, walked down to the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, to the Capital Grill for an okay dinner.
Here's the bad news: My daughter left her wallet on the counter of the small bookstore at the Lincoln Memorial and didn't realize it until half hour later when we were in the restaurant and the store had closed.
I'll be there 8 a.m. tomorrow morning, when it opens, in hopes they have it. Called the Park Police and nothing has been turned in.
I will, in spite of that small setback, be at the WWII Memorial at 9 a.m. to meet up with you guys/gals and am looking forward to it.

Just came home and I guess I beat everyone! Ha! :)
Mark, Jim, Jon and I met at the WWII Memorial, and what was supposed to be an hour talking, ended up being over 2 and we didn't really want to break it up. My sons were pretty patient with me, so after 2 hours we headed off to the International Spy Museum.
Mark, you are so funny and I could have talked to you all day. Thanks for letting me borrow your 14mm and hold the MkIII. That with the 70-200 2.8 IS is the combo to beat for sports. :) Thanks for telling us you were coming and for taking the time to spend with us.

Here is my shot with Mark's rented 14mm. What a nice fast lens it is. The distortion is a little funky, but hey, it's a great lens, and expensive.

And here is a shot of the Segway tour group. They were really going fast around the place. Mark said it costs $70 for the 3 hour tour. :) There were several comments about Giligan's Island, but I stray.;) We all were curious to see how fast the people were allowed to ride, at the top speed of 12 mph, it's pretty fun.

And here is Suzie thinking that the Mark III is one big camera! I just love the 10MM perspective :D

But I was really feeling the green monster holding that MkIII! It's a beauty. And I felt like a spoiled woman with all you handsome men there. :);)

Ha, those are great shots. Sorry it took me so long to respond. For ten bucks a day internet service at the hotel, you expect it to work? It was down from the time I returned to my hotel room at around 9:30 until this morning.
It was truly a pleasure to meet you guys/gal. Suzy, your children are like little grown men. Cute as can be also.
I don't want to get mushy, but I was truly honored that you guys would take time out of your busy days (unlike a certain soldier who will remain nameless and is probably faceless) to come meet me.
Jon, thanks for finally showing me what a filter holder looks like and how to use an ND filter.
Not wanting to tell tales out of school, but Jim is a former marathon runner and would have left me in the dust in my best day. Sweetheart of a guy too.
Now, Jon, about my larger avatar ;)
regards,
me

Mark and Jon,
Great shots to add to those posted already by Suzie! I really enjoyed the meeting...to me that is a real "value added" aspect of POTN...meeting great folks like Suzie, Mark, and Jon...the POTN is one super community of like minded folks.
Suzie, if Malone sends you a photograph can you make a cardboard cutout of him like you did of your son for the wedding? That way we could get him to a POTN meet for sure ;) We could even mail him from meet to meet...kinda like where's nifty:) Eventually he would end up in VA/MD again:D

Jim, completely agree as to meeting people. Great aspect of forum life.

Tonight, 7:30 segway tour. :D

Just google segway tour in DC.
There is more than one outfit. We went with DC tours. It's $65 for two hours, but turns out to be almost 2-1/2. And theirs are the newer ones, where the handle bars lean. Much better and easier to ride than the older ones.
Pictures to come.
