View Full Version : NYC photo permits

New York City is planning to mandate photography permits and a minimum $1 million liability insurance for photographers who shoot with one other person on any city sidewalk or street location for 30 minutes or more, or ten minutes for those with a tripod and five people.
Public comments are being accepted on the City's Film, Theatre and Broadcasting website until August 3rd at:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/mailfilmcom.html (http://www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/mailfilmcom.html)
Feel free to spread the word.
I would encourage people to mention the negative effect this will have on NY's economy, as well as the embarrassment it will bring to the agency in question (and it's leadership) when the courts declare it unconstitutional.

It's a pretty retarded idea. That is all I have to say about that.

My posting/input:
"The idea of requiring permits for photographers is not only ill conceived but an attack on freedom of the press and individual rights."

Nope - this is Bloomberg's idea of trying to make money for the City any way he can.
I'll bet background checks are required for that permit.

This has been posted before. I wouldn't be concerned.
Just another one of those laws that will go largely unenforced.

First they came for the Communists but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists but I was not one of them, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews but I was not Jewish so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.Martin Niemoeller (http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/Martin_Niemoeller/)

so if this ever did happen (and it most likly wouldnt) what do we Ptogs get in return? do we get to shoot in now restricted zones? can ANY pic we take, be it a private home, public place or even random person be used without permission? can we record crimes and police activity? I mean, they gotta give us something.... lol can you imagine this actually going through, one would think NYC would become a laughing stock!

Didn't they do something like this in London?

Not as far as I'm aware and I live in London. Why would they - it's a pretty ridiculous idea.

I'm likely completely wrong, but I thought I'd heard some banter about laws restricting photography (not sure about the permit piece). I'll see if I can find a reference.
Here's one link, first one I found with a google search:

So you think they would have time to ticket each photog? to watch them to make sure they did not exceed the 30 minutes?
I dunno..seems kinda lame to me.

Yep, probably even if passed another dumb unenforceable and unheeded law.
But if passed still some will get ticketed and pay the price, etc.

Yeah, that is true..
i can see it now...the officer was standing right on the corner as the store was being robbed, but, he could not move, since he was clocking the photog to make sure she did not go over her allotted 30 minutes.

Well, it looks like you're more than likely correct. Bloody government. Still, at least they got the smoking ban in - I'm all for that one :D
