When this juvie sapsucker showed up at my feeders i quickly took some shot through a double-glazed window. Shot #1 is an example. I then managed to get outside and managed one shot before he left. That's #2. They are both pretty poor but i thought that the comparison might be of interest.
I spent the next hour with the window open trying to get something but even though he came back 3 more times I had no success. Oh well, maybe he'll hang around.

Your comparison shows quite a difference Dan.If the settings were similar there is considerably more noise in the window shot as well as what apears to be a amagenta cast..it has the better angle on the bird though. The second image looks much more natural. Keep watching for this guy...they are one of the coolest woopeckers.

Dan, nows the time to work out a plan for that window and the feeders. Last fall I set mine up and have gotten thousands of closeup shots of all the birds that visit my yard. I took the screen out of my window and used a piece of matte board cut to fit into the open window sash, tight fitting so the window comes down on top of it and holds it in place. I then cut a hole in the matte board for the lens and an extra piece to close the hole when it's really cold outside. This winter I am going to use a piece of 2" styrofoam, for better insulation. :)

Interesting idea. I'll have to give it some thought. The big question is how did you get your wife to agree to you blocking a window?

HAHA, wife? Not me, been a bachelor for 30 years now. But it doesn't block the window, when I'm done shooting, I lift the window, take out the matte board and close the window. All done in a few seconds. ;)

So you can get away with anything! I'll be giving it some thought.

Yup, I can get away with anything. Never thought about it that way, but that's how it is.

Still, the "board" is only in the window while I shoot, nothing permenant done to the window at all. And when it comes out, I just stand it against the wall behind the curtain. It doesn't take up any space. :)
