Used to live in Denver area for many years. The first thing that comes to mind and not too far out of your way is the Black Forest Inn in Black Hawk. The food is fantastic and so is the service. They also have an outdoor beer garden.
If you can do it try to get up high and do some hiking. If you are from NC this may be challenging and possibly dangerous. Remember, the mountains will be MUCH colder than you are used to. To get in the shade is to get cool or cold. What are you interested in?

I have lived in Breck for the past 12 years. When are you coming, where you staying, what do you want to shoot (wildlife, flowers, landscapes, historics)?

I'll be out there next week. I'm interested in all of the above but will probably be shooting mostly flowers and landscapes.

The Indian Peaks area is directly west of Boulder and has some incredible cirques and vistas. Good fly fishing for brook trout too. This time of year, you should be able to drive all the way up to Brainard lake. There are moderate to rigorous hikes to a variety of different lakes from there.

If you can do it try to get up high and do some hiking. Don't overdo it, as some people are prone to altitude sickness. Years ago, my ski club was going to annual races.
Me: generally out of shape smoker - no problems.
My buddy: in shape runner of the Boston Marathon - taken to lower altitudes with water in his lungs & it took 4 days for him to recover.

Really good advice Frank. Both pulmonary and cerebral edema are real threats at the higher altitudes. For a period of time, I ran a wilderness program for teens. I always carried a supply of lasix as a stop gap measure to gain more time in case we had to get someone to a lower altitude.

I just went through the Breckinridge area last month. That was the first time I've been in through that area in about 10 years. Wow, that place has really grown and I must admit, I didn't like it at all. I'm into the backcountry, out of the way places that most people avoid. However, I have a Jeep and can get to more of those types of places. I used to live in the Ft Collins area and spent a summer in Steamboat Springs as a river guide. If you really want to get away, try going a little more North & maybe West. I really like Gunnison and Lake City and all the little backroads (and Jeep trails) around that area. There used to be some great little high mountain roads with great views around the Leadville area. Of course, I'm not from Colorado so I'm not an expert so by all means listen to someone currently living in CO.
