Please forgive my ignorance...

Does anyone have a simple way of calculating how much zoom (what size lens in mm) I would need to shoot a full framed human from various distances?

eg. 20m, 40m, 60m, 80m etc...

There's a page here (http://www.photo.net/making-photographs/lens) which has a calculator to help figure this out. Scroll down a page - it's right below "Exactly how long a lens do you need?"

Remember to calculate in the crop factor of your camera.

Thanks - exactly the kind of thing I was after!

Only problem is that it tells me I need at least 600mm... On a 300D that equates to a 400mm lens.

Here is an automatic Lens Angle of View & Field of View Lens Calculator (http://www.sweeting.org/mark/lenses/). You enter what camera and lens you have, the distance to the subject and it tells you the angle and the field of view.

.....oh, I see it's the same one that Scottes referred to....
