Many times in conversations with my fellow photographers, the topic of weight loss has come up.

As there are quite a few of us who wish to be healthier, it was decided that a POTN support group would be beneficial.

There are a couple reasons why this thread is in the 'Member Activities' section:

1. We hope that the title of the forum itself will encourage 'activity'. ;)

2. We, as members, thrive from encouragement, critique, and companionship. We share a passion for photography. Perhaps we can share a passion for a healthier lifestyle as well.

One might ask, "What does this have to do with photography, and why is it relevant to POTN?". Well, I believe that my health directly impacts my photography.
I used to be an avid hiker... I was able to climb mountains to photograph that gorgeous view from the top. I haven't been able to do that in quite some time now, and I miss it terribly.

SO...

"Hi. My name is Cat, and I would like to lose weight, and encourage others to do so also." :D

All that is needed to join is an introduction post saying hi.

Share your secrets. Share your methods. Share your thoughts. But most of all, share your companionship.

There is no specific health plan that will work for all of us. Choose one that fits you and your lifestyle. Everyone's needs are different. (I would like to state that, while open discussion is encouraged, bashing someone for their diet choice will not be allowed. Also, though ultimitely it is a personal choice, we do not advocate the use of drugs for weight loss. Please be healthy and choose a natural method, combining food choices with exercise.)

We will rejoice with everyone's success, and encourage those who stumble.

I am definitely in on this :)

I need to lose weight (I'm tired of huffing up those hills too Cat) :) and am ready to do so.

The one thing I would say is set sensible goals for yourself (ie: don't say I'm going to lose 100 lbs in 6 months...) that are achievable...and if you have any serious health issues, talk to your doctor before starting any diet.

As for me, my plan is weight watchers. It's what I used before when I successfully lost weight the healthy way...so that's what I'm going to do. My goal is 50lbs which brings me into a healthy bmi. And I don't have a time limit for it...just so long as it's progressing, I'll be happy :)

*GASP* Ah, man!

;) I am in!

My goal is 35-40 lbs in a sensible manner. I do believe that quitting smoking has contributed to my gain, but honestly I was tipping the scales even before I quit:rolleyes:

I have started a food diary, on day 2 as a fatter of mact, and it has already caused me to go 'hmmmmmm, do I really need that (insert fatty item here) right now?'

cfpackerfan

Up to this point, my only strategy has been an hour at the gym, 3 times a week.
Of course, my gym buddy had to quit, and that cut my gym time down too because I hate to go alone. I guess I should get over that.

In the past I have tried many different 'food diets'. Some work, most don't.
I like food.

SO... I'm going to up the amount of exercise, and cut down on non-essential foods.

My goal is to lose 65 pounds. I don't expect to do it quickly, but I would be happy with 4-5 lbs a month.

I even selected an apartment community that has a gym on site. Have I been yet?
30 lbs would be sufficient, although to be where I should be, I should drop about 60. It's nice to have someone around who delights in me just the way I am, but I think I'd be more delightful if I were healthier.

A true funny/sad story:

My first husband (who was culled and returned to mama a looooooooong time ago) told me that I needed to lose quite a bit of weight. Now, I had just given birth to my youngest son (now 17) and hadn't even begun to lose the baby weight. Needless to say, I was a tad perturbed with his lack of compassion.
The more I stewed, the upsetter (it's my word :p) I got.
Later that evening I said to my now ex-husband; 'Hon, you are right. I could stand to lose some weight and I figured out how to lose over 100 pounds real quick.'

Ex-hubby: 'Wonderful! When are you going to start your diet?'

Me: "Right now. Get out.'

Yay, great thread!

I want to lose 20 pounds, to be the weight I used to always be. Actually now, I need to lose 16.5 pounds, because I have lost 3.5 pounds this month. :) I'm on the "eat less, do more" diet. I restrict calories to 1500 a day by eating Smart Ones dinners (they are Weight Watcher products in the frozen food section), and Lean Cusine dinners. They help me control portions with lowfat, high calorie food. They are pretty good for frozen food, too. I supplement the dinners with cottage cheese, milk, vegetables and/or fruit. I get one dessert a day, usually a marshmallow krispie treat. :) Once a week I cheat, and that was today already because I had a hamburger, fries, and cone at Dairy Queen.

Since I can never lose weight unless I also exercise I have been working out on weights at the Y twice a week and also walking a mile at the Y. I've actually started to jog a bit and a goal is to be able to run an entire mile. I work my legs a lot because they are the biggest muscles and I figure the sooner they get more muscular the sooner they will start burning calories for me.

That is an excellent idea. A progression of photos would be helpful for encouragement as well. That way we could hand out some 'At-A-Boy's' along the way!

I want to lose 10 lbs for sure, 15 would be a bonus as it would get me under 200. :)

To lose weight I do a similar routine to Wanda. I use Slim Fast products sometimes during the day supplemented with fresh fruit or veggies, cottage cheese etc. I have a snack morning, afternoon and evening too, something light to keep the metabolism up and running.

If I combine this with 3 2hr trips to the gym (45 min cardio, 1 hour strength and 15 minutes for a shower & travel) and various other physical activities, I usually drop about 2-3 lbs per week.

I think anyones main goal should be good physical condition and health, and the fact you now look better is an added bonus to the whole package.

This is like a double bonus. When in better shape, you can do it longer and more often without wearing out, and you also want to do it more often as your libido increases. Everyone wins. :)

Well, I suppose you could make a chart with each name followed by how much weight we each want to eliminate (don't wanna lose it, cause we all go looking for things lost :)) then week one, week two, etc. under each week header would be how much eliminated weight or inches or whatever each of us achieved.
That is, IF any on here want their efforts tracked ;)

One shouldn't go over a couple of pounds/week, average. Sure, at first, many will lose a bunch, but then it will taper off. Average should be no more than 10/month. So, obviously, the time factor will be variable according to the desired amount lost.

Ok I am in. Here is the deal.

When my wife was pregnant I decided to get fit. I lost ~30 pounds. As time went by my bad habits returned (and my wife didn't help me like I didn't help her lose 85 pounds :( ) so I have put on just about all the weight. It is time to get rid of it again and I have my 10 year reunion in November. I belong to a bodybuilding website and have all the knowledge any of us could want or need so feel free to ask me anything regarding diet and excersize. Now, if I could only apply what I know (kinda like photography  ).

So I am in for 30 pounds which should put me at ~165.

For the record I need to lose some weight but am not jumping on this bandwagon just yet, I got way too much other cwap going on for now. I will say a few years ago I,being the cook, put us on hard core Atkins diet. It worked fantastic because we could eat and eat good. I mean like center cut pork chops with bacon and eggs. The problem was the fruits and veggies are limited which can't be good. We did it hard core for about 3 months and then lightly for another six months or so. I dropped 15 pounds which put me on target and Leyla dropped 20 or so. When I had my accident I lost alot of weight. A tube down your nose sucking any and all stomach contents will do that. I was concerned I was going to need lots of follow up treatment so I started eating to get my strength up. At the same time I slowed down my activity level.

Hi Mike :D

To be honest I'm not bothered by what I weigh, its more like I would prefer to be in better shape. I'm halfway to eating better (cut out most red meat, dairy and such), I just need to be active more.

Hi everyone. :D Nice to see lots of familiar faces, and some new ones too. Welcome Mike, Sam and C-Smith. :D
Maxy, you can stay, but you are not allowed to talk about your awesome metabolism or your ideal weight. :p The chart is a good idea, but I personally would rather we have a 'group' effort, all encouraging each other, rather than have a fitness coach. :p  ;)

One thing that I'd like to point out also, is that we should all be drinking more water. (I think Terri brought that up already). But specifically, you should drink half your weight in ounces of water every day. (i.e. if you weigh 100 lbs, you should drink at least 50 ounces of water every day)
It helps tremendously.

my doctor told me, I was just in to talk to her about this, that she tells her patients who are trying to get healthier and lose weight, to begin by walking for 45min a day. It doesn't matter how fast you walk, just if you are consistant about walking for 45 min. Then as you lose, and feel better, you can increase speed until walking that long isn't enough...and then she gives them an exercise regimen. She said it's not the miles but the time that makes the difference.

*sigh* my biggest downfall: it's almost midnight. I've been working (I work on my computer) I made a drink (Gin and tonic) and I get the munchies. So I have a handful of chips. :(

This happens almost every night.

For a while, I tried just having bottled water instead of a glass of wine, or a drink, and that worked, but sometimes, I just want an alcoholic drink, KWIM?

What are the guidelines for that?? I know I shouldn't snack while drinking, and I should limit my alcohol, but I've never gotten any 'good' advice on the subject.

I weigh at the local truck scales on I-5. :o

I'm in. I'd like to lose a lot. Numbers aren't really that important. It's a gauge, sure, but not the end all. I once lost a whole lot of weight, but what I lost was mostly muscle mass. Sure, I weighed a lot less, but I couldn't lift a darn think. I'm aiming for a waist size, a couple of specific fitness goals and a point where if I were to be playing a game of football with the guys, it wouldn't matter if I was "Shirts" or "Skins". :o

I second that. I'd be happy with those goals myself. Ok, here are my stats:

Height: 6'2" (depends on who measures me)
Weight: 342 pounds.

Ok, numbers don't mean that much to me. I played linebacker in college so I'm not as blobby as one would think. Thank goodness. The main reason I want to lose weight is for my family. I don't want to be the fat dad huffing and puffing on the field while playing with the kids. Now, I do referee high school football and can keep up with the 16 year old kids better than most. I play in an adult-league baseball and catch. I'm active, but just not long enough. We have a YMCA family pass, but I'm too busy (that's what I tell myself) to get there to workout. Enough is enough. I've reasoned within myself to get in better shape. Mainly for the family, but I'm wanting to get back in the military and they won't take me as-is.

Ok, here's my goal.....lose 100 pounds by Christmas 2008. According to my calculations, that is 6.7796610169491525423728813559322 pounds per month. No calculator involved in that calculation either.:rolleyes:

This is not a smart way to do it, Cat, but my best (read steady and sufficiently quick, but not too) weightloss was when I determined it hd to be one or the other- snacks or beverage- and beverage won.. . save my empty calories for G&T and munch the lime in lieu of chips, etc.

Chips-- anything crunchy and salty. . . that's my weakness and neither my BP nor my waistline appreciate it.

on a side note, one super thing about leaving my last post--- awesome BP #s even without meds!

Welcome to the newest recruits.

Cat, ONE glass of wine with an ounce or so of low-fat cheese is a good snack in the evening. It has a reasonably good nutritional balance. A handful of fruit with a few almonds is another good snack.

Light snacking is not bad done properly, it can reduce the amount consumed during one of your three meals and it keeps the metabolism working.

One of the things that really helps me is when I cut some bad carbs out. I eat next to no bread anymore, and when I do it is a light rye and an open face sandwich. I love pasta, but eat very little of it theses days. Potatoes and rice are only eaten on special occasions.

Now, if I could just kick that ice cream weakness. :( :)

One thing that I do in order to get my water for the day is to drink Crystal Light. I have found that drinking just water is not so easy unless I am working up a sweat. The little packs for 16 oz bottles work very well and are only like 10 calories.

Here is what you need to do, get rid of the bad food in the house. Throw it all away and don't buy it. If it isn't there you won't drive to the store to get it.

Alcohol has 7 calories per gram.
Carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram.
Protein has 4 calories per gram.
Fat has 9 calories per gram.

With sugary alcoholic beverages you get hit twice, once for the alcohol and once for the carbs (sugar). Usually the best alcoholic drinks are those which have alcohol but no sugar, like Jack and diet coke for instance. Just limit your intake. If 1 drink is 100 calories and you have one every day that is 36,500 calories on a non-leap year. That is 10 pounds lost right there (1 pound is 3500 calories).

Hi, my name is Becky and I want to be a loser.

I would like to lose 20 - 30 pounds...but; mostly I want to stop looking and feeling "frumpy". Short term goal is to not gain anything next week during the county fair.

I'm at a dreaded age where it is very hard to lose and very easy to gain right now. My plan is to do some kind of daily exercise for the remaining summer/fall months. Either walking or biking. According to my doctor, weight bearing exercise is a good weapon against osteoporosis. Drink more water and less beer. Substitute fruit and veggies for that bag of salty snacks at work.

Finally, make sure I spell lose and loser correctly in this thread and have looser clothing.;)

Put me on the list Maxy. I'm here, just might not be able to check in as much as some. Stuff going on - you know...

Short version of my story is that I have had my thyroid removed (cancer scare), and so have metabolic issues and I am in an exercise slump (ie none). I have a hard time motivating myself to get back to exercising, but once I do I'll like it again. Salty snacks and cheeses are my weakness, along with red wine. ;)

I'll likely be doing something South Beach like. I tried Atkins several year ago and hated it, but South Beach is far friendlier. :) Mike's leaving in about a week, I'll start in full force then.

Hello all. Just wanted to say welcome to all the new people. I'm a non-drinker so I can't help out with the alcohol issues, but I am an avid salty snack snacker. I keep those little square fruit chews on hand (the name escapes me at the moment), and when I'm dying for a bag of chips, I eat a few fruit chews. They are very sweet and somehow keep me out of the chip bag. They do have sugar and calories in them, so I can't eat a handful, but the end result is that I'm consuming fewer calories than I would be if I pigged out on chips. Fruit or vegetable snacks would be a lot healthier, but they leave me feeling deprived.

Oh, and a trick I used in college when I had to sit and study a lot. I would snack on Cheerios instead of chips. It worked really well. Cheerios taste good and fill you up, and the total calories consumed are not that great compared to eating a giant bag of chips.

wu_wei0

Wanda,
That Cheerios idea is worth a good try! I love the salty crunch, but part of it all is the hand to mouth thing- that's always been the hardest part of smoking cessation, as well. Perhaps I could help both causes with a few cheerios a few times a day eaten one at a time. Thanks!

Can I join in too? I'm 5'8'' and 256lbs (or 18st 4), and I'd like to lose about 60lbs or so to start with. I'm getting married next year and don't want the photographer to have to rent a fisheye lens for the day ;)

Also, since I got to this weight I've developed diabetes and liver disease, so even aside from losing weight, I need to learn to obsessively micromanage my diet.

I'm absolutely not willing to post a 'before' shot till I have an 'after' one (or even a during version!) that's less embarrassing, to post alongside it!

I agree entirely with whoever said to throw everything out that isn't healthy. As long as there's something in our house that I shouldn't be eating, it's generally guaranteed to be in my face within 24 hours  Also, don't get daunted by the idea of dieting - take it a meal at a time, congratulate yourself each time you successfully avoid temptation, and tell yourself that you can always crack and have a bar of chocolate later if you need to (i'm very gullible, so when I tell myself that, I always fall for it :D)

My biggest downfall, my wife's too, is that we are night-owls. We work nights and concentrate our time during the day on the kids. We don't get rolling on things that need to get done around the house until 23:00 or later. That's what kills us. After we both divorced from our first marriages, we lost weight. We got together and started gaining back. It's funny. I don't eat chips, except on a rare occasion. I don't eat cake, pies or ice cream. Even at birthday parties. We eat wheat bread and don't gorge ourselves on potatoes. Our biggest killer is fast food. We get so busy running around during the day that it's more convenient to run through the drive through. Not only is it extremely expensive, the food is horrible for you....and your waistline. We're making arrangements to eliminate fast food all together. That will help tremendously right there.

I remember watching an episode of Dr. Phil with my wife when she was losing weight. There was a guy on there that drank live 12 cans of Pepsi a day. Dr. Phil told him he could have 1-2 cans a day and drink water the rest of the time. That came out to 10 x 150 = 1500 calories a day, 10,500 calories a week or 3 pounds, and a whopping 156 pounds in one year. And he didn't even have to excersize.

I have found, though, that most fast food places are starting to cater towards the healthy minded crowds. Scan the menus and order 'healthy' (I use the term loosely). For example: at McD's , a grilled chicken and salad would be a better choice than a big mac and fries.
And water. Always drink water instead of the dreaded pop machine.
I don't think we could ever eliminate fast food from our lifestyle.... but we do try to monitor what we get from them.

That's interesting. My problem is that I don't eat or drink much anyway. I basically only drink water and black coffee, so no calories there. So I am cutting out snacks. I had a habit of eating a bowl of cereal before bed, so I cut that out too. But to lose any weight I have to exercise to use up calories and also speed up my metabolism. I swear I could eat only 500 calories a day and still gain weight, if I didn't exercise.

Then your problem might be that you are not eating enough calories. ;)
If your body feels like it is starving it will take any food that you eat and store it, not consume it. Basically your body slows down. You should eat 4-5 small meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism going. Ever wonder why they call it breakfast. It is because your are breaking the fast from your previous meal. If you eat at 6:30 pm and not again until 6:30 am that is 12 hours without food. Breakfast gets your body going again. If you wait another 12 hours between meals you are fasting again (and this is usually where the snacks come in).

So to recap:
4-5 small meals a day is best. Start early, as soon as you wake up, and eat every 3 hours or so.

Same here. We work 40 miles from home, so we spend 4.5 to 5 hours a day in the car (the traffic's very bad!), as well as 8 hours in work. We eat a lot of takeaways because we just can't bring ourselves to cook at the end of the day, and even if we do cook, we end up eating later than we should (dinner's generally at about 9).

Also, it's very hard to fit in exercise! We have so little spare time left after fitting in work and commuting, and there are so many other things we'd prefer to do, that we actually enjoy!

It was suggested to me that every two hours at work I get up from my desk and simply stretch for 5 minutes. It is supposed to serve a couple of purposes; 1. Gets the blood moving again 2. Provides much needed oxygen to the brain after sitting for 2 hours

The YMCA here in town opens, during the week, at 05:00. It's almost abandoned then, too. I would like to get there and spend 2 hours working out, swimming and relaxing in the whirlpool. The issue is that I don't crawl into bed until 02:30-03:00. Two hours of sleep just won't cut it. I could be in there, workout and be home before the kids even get up in the morning. It's all about prioritizing our time (or a lack thereof).

Oh, I forgot, best of luck to all of the POTN Losers on here. Let's keep a running total and let's see how much we've lost this time next year. I bet we could start another Canon forum with the amount of people we save.:D

:) Mike's leaving in about a week, I'll start in full force then.

how much do you expect to lose

Good Luck Red:D

My mom can't excersize at a gym(she has knee problems).......so she swims everyday after work......she's been doing that for about 2 weeks and I already see an improvement. It's making her happier too.

Add me to the list. I re-started today my diet today. Summer and grillin' ain't too forgiving.

I want to lose 20 but mainly get more in shape. I'm a little out of focus around the edges and have been huffing and puffing after a day of lugging my gear around.

I'm an average height male, 200lbs, goal is 180. Lets see if this gives me the extra oomph to stay away from the sodas and abundance of grilled food.

Max, it is lbs, not IBS. ;)

IBS is Irritable Bowel Syndrome, thinkin' this has nothing to do with weight loss.

So how is everyone doing so far? I am proud to say that yesterday I did not slip and eat any junk. My dinner was probably not as good for me as it could have been but overall I was pleased that I did not have any sweets or snacks.

Congrats Mike!

I didn't have one Soda (after I first posted to this thread yesterday), had white rice and steamed chicken (with Generals Tso's Sauce) for lunch and for dinner had a 6" Subway Roasted Chicken sub. I did break down and have a peanut butter cookie before bed which goes so well with one of those mini hersheys chocolate bars.

I'm hungry this morning, may go to our buildings' cafe and get a banana and some milk.

Thanks John. Good start for you too. Definitely make sure you eat breakfast to get your metabolism going.

No beer yesterday...but; no more water than usual either, making a point to get my fluids today. Also, going to start walking during my lunch hour, brought in my shoes and socks. We have adjoining parks just down the road with lots of shade, good place to walk. Since heat index are suppose to hit 100, I'll start out slow and work up as the temperatures come down.

"What does this have to do with photography, and why is it relevant to POTN?"

Share your secrets. Share your methods. Share your thoughts. But most of all, share your companionship.

Had an idea this morning. We could share pictures from walks. Also, if you find a good recipe to share, take a photo of the finished product. It is my understanding photographing food has some interesting challenges.

Excellent ideas Becky. Walking at lunch would be nice. I wish I had a park close. And sharing pics of food is a good and bad idea. It might make me really hungry.

Mike, great start.
John, it sounds not too bad except that snack thing. ;) You can kill lots of good effort with that kinda cheating. A serving of fruit with a few almonds or a small chunk of low-fat cheese is a good and satisfying evening snack.
BTW, white rice is not so great either. Have you tried Basmati rice, it is a much healthier option.

I have been doing good eating wise, with the exception of a Popsicle last night. After 2 weeks, my cold seems to be dissipating some so I hope to get back into a more constant exercise routine. Exercise is my only way to ensure I expel more calories than I bring in.

3 years ago I hit an all time low (well high actually). I weighed in at almost 230 and an ideal weight for me would be under 200. Changing my diet was sooo much harder than getting motivated to exercise. Cutting out high starch foods was the toughest, making a sandwich was such an easy, quick way to eat something. Like mentioned, I usually do an open face sandwich on a healthy bread now to keep the starch intake down.

Drinking lots of water really helps too, it curbs the appetite a wee bit and flushes junk through the system faster too.

I really want to be in top shape when I hit the bit FIVE-O in mid December. :D
