In some personal computers, if you have two memory modules in there, they must be of the same capacity. When I bought my computer, it came with 512MB total as two 256MB modules, and I wanted to increase the total to 1GB. I had to pitch the two 256MB modules and get two 512MB modules.

Hi,
I'm not over your side of the water so don't know where to buy cheap. BUT I can tell you that with DDR RAM you CAN mix and match modules - so your 512Mb can still be used with a 1024Mb added to it.

Bob,
It was back in the days of EDO RAM - before SD and DDR - that you had to have matched size modules in the memory slots. RAMBUS was the same with matched sizes if I remember but I kept away from that overpriced dead-end anyway and never built a system that used it.

Crucial RAM for high quality and good prices. Order from their web site (http://www.crucial.com) and they throw in the shipping. But use their memory finder and make sure that you can add just 1 x 1024 MB stick of memory. Some computers will insist on having memory sticks on the same channel be the same size, which means that you'd need to get a second 512 MB stick before adding any more.

I'm also a big Crucial fan for memory. They are a manufacturer of memory, not just a reseller, so there is a bit of additional comfort there as well.

Incidently, if your board runs dual channel DDR, you DO need to use matched modules to run dual channel. And in certain configurations you can only use double sided in certain slots and single sided in others. It is good to check your motherboard manual to see what your board will take. It may be that your board will take what you put in it and work, but your performance will take a hit.
