Hi everyone,
I am looking to get my wife a super slim, relatively inexpensive digital that she can fit in her purse. It must be fool-proof...she does not want to mess with any settings, etc. What do you think?

Probably the SD1000 if size and price are the overwhelming driving factors. Just bear in mind that no camera's fool-proof in all situations - the photo she most desperately wants to take will be in some odd-ball lighting situation where she'd either need IS, a tripod, or to adjust for backlighting . Or else will be a moving subject in low light. And you'll get the blame for it not coming out because "you told me it could do everything!"

I am thinking more like the A560. That SD1000 is a bit too steep. Yes/no?

All things being equal, I prefer the A-series. But you said "super slim" and the A5xx series aren't. The SD1000's only about $205 at B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/484782-REG/Canon_1862B001_PowerShot_SD1000_Digital_Elph.html) . Also, the 2xAA PowerShots have a reputation for relatively poor battery life; the SD1000 uses a Li ion that'll last. If you're going to go with an A-series, I'd spend a bit more and get the A630. It uses 4xAA so it's a little bulkier but the btteries will last better. Also it has a flip-out LCD which makes candid and odd-angle shots easier to manage. I use the A620 (predecessor model) for my P&S for just that reason.

I just got the SD800 IS. It is 28mm equilivent. As I don't use it that much with my DSLR, it is nice to have on the pocket job. Now if I can just make something to line up the tripod mount with the center of the lens, the panoramic mode might be handy also. Maybe it doesn't matter that much. Anybody? I was going to get the A550 to knock around with but changed my mind and went with this one. Now, with twice the money invested, I will have go be more carfefull with it.

It doesn't, unless you've got part of the pic. super-close to the camera relative to the rest. I've shot most of my panoramas hand-held.

SD1000 if smallest size is the most important feature. However, my wife didn't really like the retro look of mine. For a little more, you can consider the SD750, which more or less has the same specs as the SD1000, but has a larger 3" LCD and a more modern design. It trades off the viewfinder for the larger display, but most people I know who use ultra compacts don't use it anyway.

Personally, it's hard to beat the combination of 28mm wide angle coverage (and IS) of the SD800IS.

The SD630, in my opinion, one of Canons better Small compact cameras. I've owned it for about 2 months now and love it. I take it every were I go.
Here are some sample pics. using the SD630
