Canon A550 fails on install of drivers on Windows Vista

Hi all,

My son just purchase a Canon A550 camera and when we hook it up via the USB cable it begins the installation of the driver install but eventually says "driver installation failed". He is running Windows Vista on and IBM Laptop, any suggestions on possible solutions.

First, did he follow Canon's directions exactly? IIRC they say to install the software before connecting the camera.

Second - does the version of software with the A550 support Vista? It could be a driver signing issue if it doesn't (or if Microsoft doesn't think it does).

Yes I quizzed him on installing the software first (before hooking up the camera) and he said that he did. I checked Canon's website for Vista Compatibility and they say it is, I even downloaded the latest version of the software and installed it myself.

Hi, if your just going to download the pics from the memory card, just buy a card reader.

Was hoping to just use the USB, do you have a ballpark on what Card Readers cost?

$10 to $20 for a card reader. Up to $40 for the top of the line stuff or drive bay readers.

Ok, thanks would appreciate any other suggestions on possibly getting this working with the standard USB and Canon software if possible?

Any other imaging devices (scanners, other cameras, etc.) installed? Is the camera in the proper mode for camera-computer hookup?
