Well, I finally got my camera back after shutter failure and I have been trying out the new lens that of course arrived while I had no camera.
This is the new Sigma 55-200 DC designed for APS image sensors which I bought at 17th Street Photo for $140 shipped. This is the best inexpensive zoom lens I have ever seen. Sure it is not as fast as "L" glass, but for practically 1/10 the price, it is awesome.
A friend has the Tamron 28-200 3.8-5.6, and the Sigma is clearly superior. The Sigma has almost no "blue fringe" on high contrast subjects where it would be doing Tamron a favor to say the 28-200 is bad! The Sigma has a sharp crisp image compared to the Tamron's soft look. The colors are true and highly contrasting. The only bad thing I can say about it is the zoom ring is a bit stiff as others have already noted. For $140, I don't see how you can do without it!
By the way, 325 pictures on the new camera and the shutter is still going strong! :D
