Hi everyone, i've been thinking abt some lens swap, since some of them don't get used as much as i expected it to.
Here is my plan, swap:
1> 17-40mm f4 L $689.95
2> 24-70mm f2.8 L $1169.95
sub-total: $1859.95
For:
3>100-400mm L IS $1389.95
4>50mm f1.4 USM $309.95
5>either 1.4x/2.0x TC $279.95
sub-total: $1979.85
With extra $100, do u think it's worth it? i know i'm giving up on the wide angle side ...

I guess it depends upon what type of shooting you do.
I would keep the 24-70mm L and get the 100-400mm L. That's just me, but I dont do alot of wide angle shooting.

i always thought the 17-40mm f4 L was the fav amongst its owners...well, your current collection is awesome...if you should want to trade, it would really depend on your needs, not the lense quality, thats for sure

Yes, it is dependent on what you intend to shoot. I would keep one of the first two, simply to cover that range. Your 50, great as it is, will not be wide enough for many situations.
You have a couple of great lenses there, but I'd hate to see you trade both away, even for more great lenses.
If you want something close on a dollar-for-dollar trade but want to keep something at the wide end, keep the 17-40 and trade the 24-70 for the 100-400. You can always pick up a 50/1.8 pretty cheap for low-light shooting.
The alternative is to keep the 24-70 (for me, its more versatile than the 17-40 but that again depends on what you shoot) and sell the 17-40. Thorw in a little cash and move up to the 100-400L.
I will note that the teleconverter will prevent autofocus on the 100-400L lens with the 10D/digital rebel. Personally, with that lens, I'd forego the converter for now. See what 400 will do for you before you spend the extra $$.
What other lenses do you now have and use?

Thanks for the quick response.
I do LOVE the 17-40mm lens, the one lens that i think i'm gonna trade is 24-70mm, i hardly ever use it(only twice, i think). What i love to do is upgrade 17-40mm to 16-35mm, and add 100-400mm to my collection, maybe couple of prime lenses with large apertures for lowlight conditions in the future, i.e 50mm f1.4, 85 f1.8 or 135mm f2.0
At the end of day, i'd like to take on photojournalism/travel photography(yeah, like the ones work for national geographics), so i would consider wide angle for landscape and long focals to reach the distance beyond my feet.
I'm also a fan of sport photography, basically where the action is(even the frontline, and i'm serious), so a fast autofocus is a must, that's why i am a solid "L" user.
Any suggestions are welcome

just reading up in another thread, with either 16-35mm or 17-40mm and 70-200mm together with a 50mm, it pretty much covers 24-70 range, all i need to do is to move a bit if the framing isn't ideal, so i will sell my 24-70 and go with my plan, just hope it generates enough cash for me to upgrade to 16-35mm n i'll see how much more i need to get together so i can afford a 100-400mm

i've made my decision:
Change: 17-40mm to 16-35mm
Buy: 50mm f1.4
Buy: 100-400mm IS L
so my lens combination would cover from 16-400mm(i know the 1.6x, just ignore that for now), which i think it's pretty impressive range, and the missing ones between 24-70 i can make it up by moving my feet about.
what u guys think?

Id keep the 17-40 and pocket the change. The 16-35 does not give you that much more, you can then afford the 1.4x TC for the 100-400

i thought about it, and don't think getting 16-35mm is a wise choice, i'll keep 17-40mm, trade 24-70mm for a 100-400mm, throw some bucks in for a 50mm f1.4 and a tripod.
