From the Shearwater Journeys Pelagic Seabird tour out of Monterey, CA on July 27.
Not the greatest images but the best I got.
Bob, following up on your comment on the Grouse thread, I faced the same dilemma and then I had two cameras. I ended up taking just one and binoculars and decided to go with the 70-300 IS lens for the flexibility as well as the IS. It sure would have been nice to be able to go f/4.0 or 2.8. The big gun guys were using the shoulder "rifle"-stock type of mount for stability.
Anyway, here are a couple of the images.

Very good shots Ed and it looks like the water was very calm. How far offshore were you?

Are you kidding? Nothing at all wrong with those shots especially the first. I would keel over to even see that bird! I love albatrosses, one of my favorite groups without a doubt. Very nice. Great job and what a beauty!

Thanks Mitch. The water wasn't too bad but it did depend on what direction we were going at the time. I don't think we went more than 5-7 miles offshore at any point in time.

Thanks Cooper. Glad you like these images. They were the only bird images to come out well from the bird tour.

Thanks Bob. The albatrosses were the cornerstone of this particular trip. They are supposedly the earliest to pass through. I think we saw a grand total of 5 for the whole trip.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the comments and feedback. I have to check back and see if I have any worthwhile albatross in flight shots to share.

Not many people get to see, let alone photograph an albatross (and even rarer still to score one in golf!!:lol:)
Seriouslyy though great shots! Gald your trip was a success...

Thanks Dan. It seemed that everyone on the boat was real excited to see the Albatrosses. The other birds were also very interesting. We just didn't get close enough for good shots.
