View Full Version : Honolulu POTN Meet V - Sandys

Who is up for getting together at Sandys beach this Sat., 4 Aug? It would be cool if we could have a BBQ if someone can bring a grill and some ez-up tents (hopefully we will have better luck with the ez-ups than we did at Magic Island).
Good light for body boarding shots at Sandys is usually late afternoon. So we could BBQ and then shoot. Or we could shoot the body boarders and then BBQ and then shoot sunset shots. (Obviously KoKo Head prevents you from actually seeing the sunset, but the sky can still light up nice there.)
Let me know who is in and when you are available and what you can bring. I'm free all day, but I can't really bring my grill. It wont make the trip. It works, but it is not super stable. Although I could bring a weber if someone is good with coals.
Oh, I have my old 75-300 that people can use all day if they want. It obviously is not a fine piece of glass but in sunny conditions you can still take good shots with it. I got many keepers with it prior to me upgrading.
Aloha

I just checked the Weber and the grill rack is all rusted. I'll have to see if I can buy a new one. Anyone know where I can get one?
Time is open. If you guys want we can meet around noon and grill (assuming we get a grill) and then we can shoot with late afternoon light after that. How does that sound?
The only thing is that if we get there around noon will probably end up way down in the far parking lot.
Focal length of shots in order are: 365, 400, 265, 10mm

I seen grilles (grates) at Lowe's in Waipahu, Also GasPro on Dillingham (next to OCCC) carries some grille parts. But call them first

So it looks like we have:
me
G35
Shinigami
ChrisBlaze - after 330?
aiea1 - you in?
anyone else?
We should plan on meeting in the last parking lot coming from the main entrance at the Koko end. I marked it with a red X on the below map. The first parking areas are usually full by noon.
http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/potn/sandymap.jpg
We'll plan on meeting there at noon and then we can try to set up somewhere on the beach side. Maybe a little closer to the action.
I might go buy an ez-up now. I need one anyway. Bring your own drinks, some food to share, and a chair. Oh yah and your photo gear!

I was joined by G35Driver and Shinigami052 yesterday and we had a great time. We didn't concentrate on taking photos too much, it was more of a social bbq.
After the three of us found each other we set up the tent, grill, and coolers. G35 was king of the castle:
http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/HI/070804-POTN-Sandys/2136-800.jpg
Then we spent a while checking out each other's gear:
http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/HI/070804-POTN-Sandys/2146-800.jpg
Then it was time to fire up the grill and cook some marinated pork chops (G35's specialty) and peppered steak. While we were waiting for the meat to cook we dug into the sushi that Shinigami brought.
http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/HI/070804-POTN-Sandys/2151-600.jpg
A grill with a view is a nice thing:
http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/HI/070804-POTN-Sandys/2178-600.jpg
Shinigami and G35 took turns using my 100-400 to shoot the minimal surfing action. There was a contest going on, but the conditions were less than ideal.
Shinigami had to head home and G35 and I hung out until well after dark. Well after dark some 10 second exposures turned things back to evening:

That is when things got interesting and the ghost of G35 showed up...

G35 - nice shots. Looks like you are well up on the learning curve with the 100-400. That second shot is Kekoa Cazimero, isn't it?

G35, nice shot. You might want to try cropping the top of the photo right above Koko Crater to remove the blown out portion of the sky.
I still have to play with the hdr shots I took.

All of my pictures came out looking like crap! I set the exposure when I was using AV to -2 without knowing it and all my pictures are SUPER under exposed so much so that i can't fix them...
Sucks. I'll keep editing them and post up what I can salvage.

That's sad to hear and most of us did something like that. Accidents like that will make you remember not to do it again. I lost three months of photos by not backing them up promptly and the computer decides to die. Check the histogram after each shot to verify exposure.

Bummer. We have all done something like that. Like Linkzi said, get in the habit of checking the histogram after each shot. If you are shooting a bunch of shots of the same subit (like the surfing shots) then just check the historgram after the first three or so. Then check it again only if the light changes a lot.

Yes I have been looking at B&H...I just got a 430ex from someone on POTN...I've been looking for a 50 f/1.8 or f/1.4 (pref the 1.4). I'm also saving up for that 100-400...ahhh I need to get better before I buy too much stuff. I'd like the skill to go along with my stuff...heh thanks for letting me try it out!
