OK so I've been through the Ixus in 1 year and the G3 in 10 months. I'm now thinking of upgrading to the 10D. BUT I look at the number of choices for lenses and it leaves me with an aching head.

I will be mostly shooting outdoor - wildlife, landscapes and close-ups. What should I be looking at and why?

You can start with a good walk-around lens, for example the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 or the Canon 28-135 IS. After getting familiar with the camera, you will find out which wide or telephone lens you will need. You can try the EF 50mm f1.8 too, it is cheap and good for low-light pics.

You don't say what kind of budget you have but I'll suggest some stuff that while not cheap aren't over the top.

For wildlife I'd say the 70-200 f2.8L. Either the IS or non-IS version will do. Without doubt I'd suggest that you use this lens with at least a monopod. The 1.4 extender would also be a must-have purchase. The speed of this lens can be very important especially in the woods, where it's going to be a lot darker than you'd think. So you'd effectively have a 112-320mm f2.8 zoom without the extender and a 168-480 f4 lens with one!

For close ups the 100mm f2.8 macro is the choice. It'll give you a lot of working room between you and the subject and it'll go to 1:1 without an extension tube.

My first Canon lens was a 24-85 f3.5-f4.5 zoom and I'm still happy with it. It'll give you something moderately wide, through "normal" and complete a sysytem with the exception of something really wide. The 24-70 f2.8L is a better lens but very much more money in a focal length where f2.8 isn't all that impressive for lens speed.
