Pretty uninspiring lighting. I like the previous set a lot better...

yeah, i'd tend to agree as well...the light's powerful enough, just no drama to it. the other set was stronger.

does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the best of boring lighting?

Maybe (a lot of) post processing?
Q&D as an example:
Convert a copy of the image to Lab. Select L channel.
Copy-paste that onto the original. Blending mode Hard Light, Opacity 80%.
Gaussian blur 2.
Convert to sRGB (original image was AdobeRGB)

I don't know exactly what that does, but I like the result. ;)

I actually like the original picture better than Rene's treatment. I think that probably comes from being more in the photojournalist school of thought. I know when I am presented with "boring" lighting, I tend to go tight and take a lot of head shots.

These aren't that bad at all... I'd crop #5 and #6 tighter for basic face/shoulder shots and some major portion of the instrument...

#2 is my favorite... Only #8 is a bit of a streach... the rest of the set has lots of merit, and combines for a well captured event...

Nice pictures, but yes the "uninspired" lighting makes these look like cookie cutter images. I like #7, but would lose the cable in the bottom right and maybe get rid of the drum set on the left.
