The below picture is pretty sharp in the middle but it all goes a bit wrong round the edges. Especially in the top right.
Is this normal and simply requires a bit of sharpening, or am I doing something wrong? I'm pretty new to this digital thing, so sorry if its a stupid question
Cheers!

My guess is that the lens itself does not have a completely flat depth of field.
Try using a greater depth of field to compensate for it.
(A true MACRO lens, should have an exceptionally flat depth of field, but a lens that just focuses close may not specifically strive for such a flat depth of field as the cost of the lens will increase.)

The light is different in that corner too. Much less contrast there, isn't it?

Had to try. Sorry, but this is such a fun way of learning. :p

A little more contrast and local contrast in the corner. No sharpening.

f/4.5 at 85mm won't have much depth of field this close. I'm surprised you got as much in focus as you did.
This looks very sharp for having no sharpness applied. Adding a touch of sharpening would make this look stunning. For a web size image, try Unsharp Mask at something in the range of Amount 100% to 150%, Radius 0.3 to 0.6, Threshold 0. Also add a bit of contrast as Meow did.
It is perfectly normal for RAW images to require some sharpening. If you had taken a JPG the camera would have sharpened a bit before it saved the JPG.

Please don't apologise... I have a 100 more that need looking at. If you want to learn you are more then welcome to edit those for me as well  :D 8)

You should have seen the other 5 that I took of the same leaf  :D

Hah-hah! You should see mine.
I find the digital learning curve very steep, almost intimidating for a rusty film guy like me. I've found it's easier (for me) to see things in other people's pics (because I'm not biased or blind or insecure or...).
