Hey guys,

These are some of my first photo's, I dont think they are super special, but I like them. They are taken with a P&S A75. I take these with the idea of developing my photographic view on things before my good equipment comes in next month.

Nice sunset. The last three could be improved a bit by using the 'rule of thirds'. Try a search if you don't know what that is - lots of info on it is available.
Keep at it!

Thanks guys, this is exactly what I was looking for.
I think I understand the rule of thirds now.

I really like the B&W one, but I feel likes its missing something, maybe I will re-crop it using the rule of thirds..
As for the washed out picture, I think its a result of poor post proccesing, ill post the origional a little later.

Sunset is nice. The tree is well placed and the horizon is great.

The doggy: We can barely see his eyes. This is difficult since the sunlight and shadow, white and black makes for a very difficult exposure. Notice some sunlight has been washed out to pure white...
Try to expose so that the IMPORTANT brights are retained, and then boost the shadows (his eyes) that are important by using reflectors, fill flash, or post processing.

the Sailboat. We really don't need all that sky (unless you are invoking 'freedom') also, is the colour of the sail colourful? Perhaps colour would work best on this image. You could also brighten up the craft a little to make it stand out a little more...

Blazing sun.. Very difficult exposure including such bright objects. This photo just doen't work for me...

Good 'first photos'

The last two do nothing for me.

The sunset is very nice, and for me, I don't have a problem with the minimal amount of horizon demonstrated on this image. "Rule of Thirds" as an excellent way to demonstrate directional movement, tension, or asymmetrical interest. It is correct ninety-nine percent of the time. This shot however I think is fine as is.

The shot of the dog is the real standout in this batch. I love the contrast, but unfortunately he lost a bit much in the shadow. Did you try something like this? (I made a duplicate layer, deselected everything except the dog so that the darker background remained, I brightened the dog a little bit, and then erased the area of the dogs right eye, so that the appropriately exposed right eye of the original shot came through.) Three minutes Photoshop.

Thats pretty nice Rad, I think it looks much better.

Sorry for not really following up on these, I have been really busy this week with some things. I tried some new shots using your suggestions this last Thursday on Canada Day at Niagara. The scene shots sucked because the place was too crowded and I just did not have the room nor the equipment. Luckily, my 2 YO cousin was very cooperative, Hopefully I have some improvement with some of the shots of her.
