Ok, I take a stab at it. Here are a couple of frames that I have recently made:

http://www.thenationfamily.com/images/other/portland/may04/heron_frame.jpg

To make both of these I used Photshop 6.0. Once the image was done and sized to the size I wanted, I would increase the canvas size by x pixels. Generally I use between 4-10. I think I did 4 pixels in black for the first one and 10 pixels in yellow for the bird.

Then I would change colors to white and increase the canvas size again, this time by 40-60 pixels. More or less depending on how much white space you want. To get extra room at the bottom for text I would then enlarge the canvas size one more time but anchor the picture to the top instead of the middle then increase only the height.

Finally I would then select the color of the frame I wanted and increase canvas size one more time (anchored to middle). I generally use about 10-30 pixels for this, again depending on how much frame I want.

Then on some I will add a drop shadow to the frame, some I will not.

I hope that helps a little. Sorry I couldn't provide pictures or greater detail but I don't have the program here at work.

Good luck.

Tim

May I invite you to visit my homepage where you can find PS actions I use for framing pictures from my 10D.
Analyze the two actions (for portrait and landscape formats) and you will be able to derive alternatives based on these.

Have fun!

you gotta stroke it!

err... select all > edit > stroke > enlarge canvas > repeat as needed.

well, i've never seen an example of this but that's a whole other thing all together. this is how i would do it: you have to select or mask the object you want to bring out. then copy it and paste it to another layer above the original one. then paste another copy of that object on a new middle layer but make it solid black, gaussian blur it and lighten the opacity to give the object a drop shadow. that takes a lot of skill and practice so don't expect it to be easy at first.

are you looking at something like this? I made the drop shadow a bit dark, but is this what you might be looking for?

Threw that together in Photoshop in about 20 minutes, you can if you just play a bit with your software. Look for some good tutorials on framing and it will set you on the right path.
