ok, here are the Deep Purple shots from Tuesday. i gotta say, w/ professional lighting, it makes taking photos so much easier, and when you've got a seasoned band like DP, they make yr life easier too, by striking all the rock poses. i also gotta say that these are my best quality shots, at least from a technical perspective, and the ambience of the stage lighting helped immensely. I was the only one shooting, too, which was nice; just had to work around the guy manning the video cam for the live feed.

it was really funny, juxtaposition-wise, to head over to the Middle East after this show and shoot You Am I there...like going from enough light to illuminate a small planet, to the innards of a dingy cave.

here's the whole lot (http://narlus.zenfolio.com/p490480618), but these are a few of my faves; i could easily have posted a few more, so feel free to check out my site for the full set.

Damn, now you know my secret ... not me but the lighting I get to shoot with! With both you and John shooting in good lighting I am now superfluous, sigh. (Tromps off to computer to play StarCraft rather than post process images.)

thanks for the comments, all. i was really happy w/ the results myself. well chuffed, as the blokes say.

when i first looked at the RAW files on my work computer, using Picasa as a RAW converter, they looked really dark. i'd dialed EC down one or more stops consistently, since during the BOC set (to be posted later), i was blowing highlights. i probably should have shot shutter priority, but i don't typically do that in non-sports settings, and figured i'd not try something new in a concert setting (i learned this lesson the hard way for The Stooges show).

when i looked at the RAW files at home using ACR, they didn't look as nearly as dark. of course, my calibrated monitor and difference in video cards could play a role as well.

well, one thing *is* certain Dwight - i am very jealous of this sort of lighting, now that i've had a chance to taste it. but i wouldn't give up yr casino gig just yet :D

Well, I lost to the Zergs again anyway so I guess that's not the thing to do. Huey was fun last night ... I got there while they were still doing a sound check although they were actually reworking some songs ... it is amazing to hear/watch real talent work out phrasing and harmonies in real time ... that's the part I enjoyed the most.

great trivia answer:

"The News", huey lewis' band, was the backing band (then known as Clover) for Elvis Costello's debut _My Aim Is True_ LP.

edit - toss me a bone, dwight - what's yr favorite shot of my series? ;)

Very nice photos. Thanks for sharing. Was that 135L you used by chance? It has that look.

thanks!

lenses used were the 17-55 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8 IS; i brought my 85 f/1.8 as well, just in case, but as you can see, there was plenty of light (and most of these shots were stopped down to f/5.6 or so).

Nice shots. Is the guitarist levitating in #7? by his stance it doesn't look like he jumped but he is definitely off the ground.

when you get that old, you take whatever elevation yr legs can give you. ;)

I like 6 (3 for 1!) and 8 a lot. #3 looks kinda reminds me of somebody else.

Great set - I really like #s 5, 6 & 7.

Good light makes a huge difference but you still need to know how to take a good photo to capitalise on it.

Longer than that other bloke was - combined. ;)

Stellar stuff, Narlus. I knew you'd do well on this. LOVE the drummer pic.

Shutter priority (that is when you chose shutter speeds, right?) is my SOP. I swear by it - even for gigs.

BTW - you were spotted by Roger, by the looks of it ;)

Great shots!! One o' my fav bands from the 70s. Too bad Blackmore and Lord aren't with them anymore. Steve Morse is an awesome player, though, and sounds much like Blackmore on the old classics.

Thats roger glover, the only thing about him on the ground is the bottom end, i love these shots, i was wondering if you were shooting for the band or some one involved w/ the show, i have wanted to get some shots of the bands here when they come around ( small venues) do they mind if your snapping away at them, purple's former lead guitarist richie blackmore posts a warning before his shows " cameras' and equipt. will be confiscated and not returned"
great shots.

I don't think the purple is too deep at all. The colors look great to me. :)

Nice stuff. Very tight and not noisy at all.

Great shots Narlus!!! What light set up did you use?

narlus
19th of September 2007 (Wed), 10:31
there was so much stage lighting that i was shooting @ ISO 500 most of the time, and stopped down to f/5.6 or so. funny thing was that they did allow flash, but it was so not needed.

thanks for the replies all. did anyone read my review? ;)

Ya know, most will initially look at these and think about the exposure, the color, the DOF — I know I did. But I have to say, you really captured the moment as well. The first shot, the bassist, is just fantastic!

thanks seesponge. i was thoroughly satisfied w/ my results, if i do say so myself. the band was rockin', the lighting was great...couldn't ask for anything more, really.
