Looking to upgrade from the 300D. The decision is, should I purchase a new 10D or go for a second hand 1D (the MkII is out of my price range :( )? I'll mostly be doing sports photography so I'm slightly leaning towards a 1D because of its better performance. Your suggestions appreciated.

If sports is the main focus.. then I'd agree.. the 1D is the better choice.

The 1D performance is virtually identical to the MkII.. the only REAL difference is the file size and the CCD Vs CMOS image difference and battery life.

With the 1D you can overcome any oerceived limitation of the 4.5 MP file size by shooting in RAW and increasing the filesize when you convert... it makes perfectly good 11"X17" and larger.

I own both cameras and it's a no brainer. 1D 1D This camera is still a real sports machine It will crank 8 frames a second with a high speed card. It is rugged and bult to last. If you use it correctly you can earn enough to buy a MKII eventually. The 10 D is a wonderfull camera but in low light and adverse conditions I feel the 1D will function better and is more versatile in sports shoting situations.

I like my 10D, but the 1D is a better camera to shoot action:

- Faster, more accurate focus

- AF works to f8 (so a 400 f5.6 + 1.4x TC will AF)

- Weather resistant body

- Built in portrait grip

- 8fps for 21 frames with large fine JPG

- Built Pro quality

Think of the 1D as an "L" body. This is a pro tool, the 10D is a good qualaty consumer SLR. For sports the 1D is far better, for other photography the 1D is still a good camera.
