My first portrait kind of shots in a very rudimentary home studio. Other than the sloppy backdrop, any suggestions??

nice shots,
I would either crop the face or frame the whole body..

I like the crop on #1 better & the exposure on #2 better. Nice, alert expression on the dog. You've almost got it!

The lighting on the second shot works. Gone is the yellow cast from incadecent lights (or reflections) and the catch lights in the eyes.

Sadly, the white strip on the chest goes nowhere, the collar tags are distracting (for a portrait) and I would have liked it in portrait mode too.

Very good poses. They are pretty smart dogs, so a well trained on will be easy to photograph (stay, sit, laydown, work with me  )

Both very nice pics. Looks a lovely dog with a nice bright expression.

The first one is suffering from the framing. As Sendide said, either crop in on the head, or include the whole body. Watch for paws, ears, tail etc being cut off.

You have got more detail in the black coat on the second one. Was the lighting that different ?
