How do you get it to take inside with low light with out using the flash?
I have tried it on P, AV and Tv and if you don't put it on auto to where the flash will pop up the pictures are really bad. What am I doing wrong here?
And I even tried raising the ISO up. and still no good.

My G3 I have I could use it with out flash in the house in all the modes.
P mode was the best. I had trouble if shooting something moving it would blur some what. But as long as it was a still shot it did some what decent. wasn't the best but. I mean the Rebel is really bad the photo looks like crap. I know I got to be doing something wrong. HELP! :?:

Now if its in auto mode and the flash fires it's does great.
and too sometimes when I'm taking a shot of something it want fired.
I press the button but it does nothing. And I can back up a few feet and it will fired what makes this? Is there a way to shot inside pic's with out using the flash? And too there was something else but it has slip my mind for now. Maybe I will think of it later and post that question for all you good people to help a dumb girl out. I need a book called
" photo" book for dummies. ha.

and too I have the external flash 420EX, But I was thinking I could take shots with out having to put it on each time. I like doing shots with out any flash at all. Can someone help me please I love this camera but if it's like this I will be returning it. And keep using my G3.
Thanks I would appreciate any help,

and too do you have to buy a special lens to do micro shots? I was out today with the camera and tried to get close on a flower and it would do nothing but blur out. Do you have to buy a micro lens for this type of shot? very up close like I have with my G, The kits lens would just blur out when I got up close on something is that normal or this type of lens?

I tend to use manual mode a lot of times.

If you look through the viewfinder you'll see on the bottom a scale (the built in light meter). That will show you your exposure. IF you are on the left, you need slower shutter speed or wider aperture. If you are on the right, the opposite.

YOu need a pretty fast lens for no-flash-low-light photography (at least f/2.8 I'd say). Shoot wide open (max aperture)

Here's a shot taken indoors without any flash
DRebel + 50mm f/1.8
Aperture: 1/8
Shutter Speed: 1/60
ISO-100

P is like Auto but without the flash
probably the only thing you can do is up your ISO and maybe set it up on a tripod and take a long exposure shot
that's how i do mine

the camera works just like film. if u wanna take a shot in the dark with film u have to expose it for longer times. like cmm said, use ur light meter. also ur gonna need to use a tripod or else it will turn out blurry because of the long exposure times.

I know on the G3 wide open is like F 8.0 what is it on the Rebel?
The dial has me confused it will keep going. to like 15 16 and goes all the way up to 32 so is that wide open? sorry but all this is new to me again.
like some of you said the Rebel is a whole different world.
and it is I feel like I got to learn all over again and had just kind of got to learning a bit with my G, where all the buttons where and what this and that would do ha.. oh well I will learn in time. just got to read and read and ask ? if you don't know. Thanks for your help. :D

no go the other way 8 is not wide
you need to get down to 2 something but you can't do that unless you have a lens that will let you
we can only get to 3.5 at 18mm and 5.6 at 55
so you need to get the 50mm 1.8 which will be almost all the way open

Gail, that shot was taken with the 50mm f/1.8 lens (a $75 lens), NO FLASH. The smaller the f number, the larger the aperture. Keep that in mind.

For that shot, I used 1.8 - smallest f number, largest aperture. 1/60 second shutter speed. THE CAMERA WAS HANDHELD. Also, i used iso-100. If you double the ISO number, you double your shutter speed as well.

At iso 400, that shot could have been taken at 1/250 second with the same result.

OK i think i got this i hope i will give it a try. but I need that lens don't i ? the lens that came with the rebel kit want work right? I need to buy one of the 50mm f/1.8 lens in order for me to open wide get more light in right? and the lens I have on the kit will not open that far. to get it down to F2.0 or say 3.0 like the G, I can go down to 2.0 sometimes on it.

I'm sorry if I'm even confusing you. I'm all screw up tonight guess I need to put it away and try it fresh in the AM with a clear head huh.
Well thanks for your trying to help me. I know you all hate to get a hold of a dummy like me. and haven't to explain things over and over,, ha
well maybe I will try it again in the morning,, see what I get.
I appreciate it very much man. Thanks, :D :P 8)

what i'd do to try and get it to work is to set it to AV
it will let you set the fstop/aperture on there make it the lowest you can get it

Yes, you pretty much got it.

And, you're right, the Kit lens is not very fast - f/3.5 at the wider end.
The 50mm f/1.8 is a cheap, awesome lens.

I'm glad I could help  . These guys here have helped me ever since I signed up (they helped me spend almost 2,000 too), and continue to do so.

Check out the sticky thread at the top of this page "All the best links" and you'll find links to understanding APERTURE, SHUTTER SPEEDS, DOF, all that good stuff. After you read those you'll have a much clearer view on these "weird numbers" and relationships between them.
