An adult Green Heron approaches the nest cautiously. Moments earlier crows had caused a noisy ruckus near the nest, sending all 5 young herons scattering for cover.

Taken with Canon 30D and 100-400L IS handheld.

Pretty shot! Nice and clear with a perfect pose. I know these guys are flying around the wetlands where I live but I have yet to see one. Hope I can get as good a look as you have here someday.

Thanks Dennis. The key is to find the nest site ;) Green Heron nests are one of the more difficult ones to find though. The nest doesn't even look like a typical nest.

Great catch. We have them all over the place now, and all of a sudden. They don't seem all that shy either. :)

Thanks Mitch. We see our fair number of Green Herons here too but to find a nest is harder. It was a nice experience to see how the parents and young interact near the nesting site.

Superb capture...composition, colour and detail are spot on. The use of the subject's environment really makes your subject stand out. Well done!

Thanks Gary. It was a very productive nest with all 5 fledged. Last year there were only 3, I think.

Thanks Karen. I took many photos of the young. Some are on my PBase site and many still not post-processed (the drawback..if you can call it that, to taking many pictures :-)
