C&C APPRECIATED I went to Hoover this morning and took the dam picture. This is actually one half of a 2-picture panoramic but I think this one can stand on its own if it had to.
I took the pic a 1am-ish and as I was driving away I thought to myself "Why didn't you shoot RAW?" It's a good thing I live 30 miles away since I am pretty sure they run nightime through that part of the country once per day. Guess I'll go back. If you took this picture would you do anything to it in post? Lens flare on the right-most light?(I kinda like it)
(I did take a few different aperature and this one is the best "stand-alone" picture I have.)

As far as the technical aspects of this shot, I think it worked out just fine. My problem with this picture is that I am having trouble getting my bearings. I can't really tell what I am looking at. I was just there for the first time last week so I still have it in my mind. Maybe there are some key components that are too dark for me to tell. I guess what I am trying to say is that I would have preverved a different viewpoint.
OK, now that I look at it a bit more, it seems that you are on the road on the Arizona side. I didn't go over there, so it was hard for me to tell.

Yep, it's from the AZ side. I tried to get one from the NV side but there aren't too mnay places to park and not cause an accident. The one place I found wasn't great. There was too much junk and guy wires in the way.
I know of a place that I can get a decent picture of the full dam (from the low side) but I'll have to go there during the day.
nice, I really like this one.
Thanks Francis

Yes, and thank you.
I took the full gambit of exposures. When I have some time and get my head on straight (long night ,early morning) I will look through to see if I can find a better exposure. But, this picture is the only one that is capable of standing alone. The rest are 2-part panoramics.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I am generally not too happy with the shots I got. It was so hot out and I just didn't feel like searching out better places. I will post mine soon.

Is it just me, or is the horizon off on this one?

More than likely the horizon is off. I see what you mean and I didn't "level the bubbles" I took the pic for what seemed to please my eye.
If you see it the way I see it the left side is slightly higher then the right. But, I think it gives a sense of depth. I've been playing with the pic since I read your post and I can't decide if I want to change it.

I second the horizon problem. Also, if I hadn't been to Hoover dam, and you told me where it was I would be very confused as to what perspective this was to the dam.

The above being said, I'm not sure I could do any better. Night shots are tough.

Where can I get some dam bait?

Yea, most people recognize it from the other side. There's just not too many accessible places to get a good shot that I know of.

The one bright star effect bothers me. But other than that great shot.

Fantastic dam photo.
Did you take anymore dam photos? Id like to see them. Im glad there were no dam people standing around, it wouldve made the dam picture less beautiful. And a ugly dam photo is just that a dam ugly photo.
I especially like how the dam light reflects of the dam water. Its Dam-tastic.

I dont like the lens flare caused by that light but out of all the photos I shot it was the coolest looking one.

This reminds me of the TBS commercials for Jean-Claude Van Damme's movie festival...It's Van Damme good.

It's a nice shot but I agree it's difficult to get the perspective at first glance. I think it's because of the bit that juts out on the left - makes it look like the dam is running perpendicular to its actual direction.
I also feel that there's not enough detail in the shadows, so this produces an imbalance to the overall exposure.
Leveling would also help improve the image.

I second, or third, or fourth, the leveling issue. Otherwise, I like it.

Nicely exposed, but is it me or does the image seem to tilt a little to the right.

Does this horizon look better?
