View Full Version : How to save metadata in web jpg, CS3?

OK. In CS2, saving an image with the metadata intact wasn't too hard: I just used the "Edit in ImageReady" selection and saved as a jpg. In CS3, ImageReady doesn't exist. There's only the "Close & Open Bridge" or "Save for Web & Devices" selections.
So how do I save as an optimized jpg with the metadata intact?

I use "Tools, Append Meta Data, pturton" in Bridge to re-insert my copyright and other Metadata.
This adds my copyright but does not restore the EXIF data.

Does the metadata get embedded to the photo?

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do: Keep the EXIF data like ImageReady used to. Right now I have no idea how to do that and optimize the photo for web use.

what file format are you starting with? Tiff or jpeg?

Nope. Thanks, though!
Normally, I'm working in PSD, but that shouldn't matter. All I want to do is the "Save for Web & Devices" option, with the addition of saving the EXIF data in the photo. The workaround in CS2 was to "Open in ImageReady," but that is no longer an option in CS3.

Just wondering if anyone has figured out how to do this in CS3...

Maybe you could clarify: what exactly are you trying to save to the file? Are you making changes in Bridge that you're trying to save to the file? Some things get saved to a jpeg, others that are specific to Photoshop are stored in the program. So, if you could give a specific example of what you are trying to save it might help.

I'm trying to keep the EXIF data that holds the camera and lens settings. It's a standard and can be read by extensions like FxIF and others. Photos that I want to put on the internet, I save in Photoshop using the "Save to Web" option (in the File menu). I am attempting to get the highest quality possible and stay within the size limits of the POTN forums, yet still keep the EXIF data in the photo. See the attached screenshot of an image I posted to these forums using ImageReady (which doesn't exist any more).
Sorry if I'm not being very clear. Maybe nobody does this anymore...

Ahhh, what you are saying reminds me: I don't use Save for Web in PS, but I hear that when you do it drops the metadata. If you use Save As, you keep the metadata. What you need to do to use save as is ensure that your file is in 8-bit mode (Image/Mode/8 bit) and is converted to the sRGB color space (Edit/Convert To Profile). I believe Save to Web does those things automatically. I suppose it drops the Exif info to cut down the file size, but my photo site uses the Exif!

Great! Thanks, Tony! I like your photos! I'll try that, I just wish it had a slider to let you know how big (file size) your saved photo will be. That's what I miss in ImageReady. I thought in CS2 that Save As deleted the EXIF data? I guess it doesn't in CS3, in any case.
Thanks again! That solved my problem! :-)
