Hey,
This is my first post and i was reading the message board and thought that i might get some advice here. I have a Drebel and i had an accident and the Drebel is non-economical to fix. So, my insurance company is going to buy me a new one. Should i go and pay the extra cash and purshase the 10D. I am not a pro photographer (not yet :):)) what does everybody think and if you can tell me if i am paying $500 extra for the 10d what am i paying for.
Thank you,
Jeff

I wouldn't buy a Rebel... can't really tell you what the extra $500 is for, but it's like buying an acura over a corvette.

Besides the Firmware Hacks for the Rebel, you will be getting:
- Metal Body
- Selectable Focus Modes
- Mirror Lock Up
- PC Socket for external Studio Flash
- FEC (Flash Exposure Control)
- Larger Buffer and Shots per second
- Arguably, a more professional looking camera.
I'm sure there's more. If you want to compare features easily, try this:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/CAMDB/compare_results.php?sections%5B%5D=510&sections%5B %5D=436&submit=Compare
But in the end, if the image is what matters, there is no difference.

we need to know more about your photography first.
If your photography justifies spending the extra cash then do it.
10D has....
Better build quality (but if you dent your rebel beyond repair then the 10D would be a more expensive toy to play football with)
Larger Buffer/slightly higher FPS.
More control over metering & AF
Custom functions without a hack.
It's black ..... ;)
(that is a smiley, it means I am JOKING, this is aimed at a small few, you know who you are)
The battery grip i more expensive.
You get a wheel on the back.
Flash exposure compensation without a hack
Schtop! This list goes on, but if you go 'yea, and?' to more than half of the items so far then you probably done need a 10D

I'm not sure which is the Rebel and which is the 10D in this analogy. :D
The 10D is definitely nice and I would love to have one, but at the same time that $500 could buy a lens. Or almost buy an L lens. :D

Acura = Rebel
Corvette = 10D
Saleen S7 = 1Ds :D

well, I am just starting out right now. I will be doing mostly sports photography and such. But first i need to see if my insurance company will allow me to pay the extra money to get the 10D. Anybody know any information about how that works?
Thanks

Well, usually, the insurance company just cuts you a check. What you do with that money is up to you.

I just ordered a 10D for $1211...at that price you have to go with the 10D...I think its worth the difference. (Onecall.com has a sale)

Someone has an overrated sense regarding their camera. A better analogy would be an Acura over an Acura with added options.

That being said, the Rebel is a Honda, and the 10D is the Acura :P

JSchao,
go to a camera store and try out the 10D!
You now know the DRebel, so you can judge whether the different look&feel of the 10D is appealing enough to you to spend the extra money.
You should be aware that most people on the forum suspect that Canon might unveil a 10D replacement at the Photokina in September. However, this new model will most likely be more expensive than the old one.
Best regards,
Andy

With all due respect to SoCal69, you should be asking your insurance company (and it would have been helpful to ask a question like that before you had a loss).
In the past, companies tended to cut checks based on replacement cost (usually meaning that you could go and buy a new one of the same or similar model), but things are getting tight all over, as they say.
I recently got a note from my insurance company stating they were changing that policy to one of reimbursement after the fact, i.e. you go out and buy the replacement item, and turn in the reciept, and then they figure out how much they are going to reimburse you for.
If you think that's bad for replacing a camera, try an entire house on your tintype. They now want you to front all the re-building/replacement costs (hopefully you can find a contractor that isn't in hock up to his eyebrows that can carry you for a bit) if your house burns down or is swept off its foundations by a tornado, and then an adjuster will decide after the fact if you deserve to get any money out of them.
Beware...
