Is there a decent battery pack available for the 420EX flash?

I'd check and see if you could use a Quantum battery pack. I'm pretty sure that they'd make an adaptor cord.
I decided to go with the NiMh AA batteries rather than use my Quantum 1. The NiMh batteries are relatively inexpensive, hold a charge forever, are much lighter than the Quantum, and don't require any umbilical cords that I'd need to deal with.

I just bought an 8 pack of nimh batteries today, and noticed that they just jumped from 2100mah to 2300mah.

2300mAH doesn't mean anything. Checkout this article. It may be a little old but gives a good idea into what to expect from different batteries.

I have been using http://www.thomasdistributing.com for my purchases of NiMH batteries. I have bought Kodak 1850mAH. They have been very good to me so far.

I think that the test you reference does prove some things.
1) Some brands perform better than others. (we all suspected that this was the case. Which is why people are always asking for advice about performance on various products)
2) For the most part the higher the mAh rated batteries ouperformed the lower mAh rated batteries. (this is good, right?)
I am happy to see the ratings increasing. There is a chance that my battery operated equipment may get a boost from this.
That was a really interesting study though. I wonder who the actual manufacturer of some of those batteries is.

One important thing to notice is that some companies batteries though rated higher in mAh aren't performing upto snuff with other company batteries though they are rated lower in mAh. I too always wonder the same about manufacturers of some unnamed batteries in plain cover.
