It depends on the shots you are after and the access you have. I shoot at Infineon with a 500mm f/4 and will use the 1.4xTC at times as well. Now, don't let that scare you, it's because I'm going for tight shots from a long ways away. A 100-400mm or a 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4xTC would work well. You can also shoot with a 70-200mm + 1.4xTC, but you will be limited to mostly side panning shots. If you are shooting with credentials I'd say something in the 400mm range would be best in combo with your 70-200mm.

I dont have credentials so I will be on the outside with the fans so would you say a 400 5.6 or the 100-400 or is the 300 2.8 with a conveter better to go along with my 70-200
I want to get some tight shots I have never been ther for a IRL race or nascar just NHRA
Thanks Tim

I'd say the 400mm f/5.6 in combo with your 70-200mm would be the best. If you only wanted one lens the 100-400 would be the choice. You may be able to get away with the 300mm f/2.8 + 2xTC, but I've never really used the 2xTC so can't comment on quality... however that would get you the most reach. I was never able to use the 1.4xTC on the 100-400mm with any success, and I guess it would be the same thing with the 400mm f/5.6.
The 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4xTC would be the highest quality at ~400mm and will give you a great 300mm as well (toss in a 2xTC and this would be a killer combo). I guess it all depends on what you want to pay to rent and how much you want to carry around.

Of the three you listed, I would say the 100-400 is going to give you the fewest keepers and lowest quality. The 300mm f2.8 with the 2x TC would be next. You should have some really good quality shots with the 400mm f5.6. The keeper and quality of the 300mm f2.8 (with or without the 1.4x TC) is unbeatable. Plus, you could stick the 1.4x TC on your 70-200. I would choose the 300 with the 1.4x and if you can, the 2x.

ok thanks guys
is the quality of the 400 5.6 better than the 100-400 ? and also are you saying that the conveter wont work on either of them ? only on the 300 2.8 and my 70-200 2.8 ?
Thanks Tim

Tim,
Yes the quality of the 400 f5.6 is better than the 100-400. The 1.4x TC will work on both of them. I think that the IS will not work on the 100-400 and I think that you are limited to the center focus point on it. I don't think there are any issues with the 400 f5.6. The image quality and focus speed will be reduced on both of these but probably more so on the 100-400. If you were thinking about the 2x TC, I think that you will loose auto focus on both of these.

Ok thanks
I think my best bet would be the 300 2.8 and 1.4 extender to go along with my 70-200 2.8
