So i just got my new flash (first ext flash ever) and Im having a hard time figuring out how to use it. I normally shoot in AV/TV mode....and when im in AV trying to take a low light photo, the camera gives me a shutter speed of like 1/10-1/40, which is impossible to hold still. Its almost like the camera is setting up the shutter/aperture for a photo without a flash. Tried to find a write up about what im asking about in the links posted here, but couldn't find anything that covered what I'm talking about...i did try using M for awhile, but the subject would be lit but the background would be almost black

I need like a basic tutorial for either just using an ext flash, or using the 430ex. Ill look over the posted links again

Yes, when you're using the flash with AV/TV mode, the camera is actually metering for ambient light, and the flash will fire as fill flash. Try instead putting the camera in M (if you don't want that, try P).

I've learnt a lot from it.
