I hate to say that but last night they came to my house and have stolen my D60

On top of that my new 17-40L, 550ex and bg-ed3 have also been stolen.

There are days I'd prefer to stay in bed.

Sorry to hear about those heartless crooks carting off with your camera and lenses. But it could have been worse. Canon could have fixed your 70-200 earlier in which case you'd be out a 70-200 as well.

Hopefully your home insurance will cover the theft and you can upgrade to a 10D or maybe, just maybe, a 1DmkII. :)

I always hate to hear about someone being victimized in any way, but I always feel a little worse when it's a friend, whether actual or only perceived. I also cringe a little when I hear that someone's camera equipment has been taken. That's easy to relate to, and I know how I'd feel under the circumstances.

I'm afraid I can only offer moral support, but at least it's something.

That sucks, Mikeg. It really, really sucks.

BTW, where are you located?

Look on the bright side now you can go and get new gear. It's always fun shopping for new toys, camera shopping is even better.

Will insurance cover them?

That sucks! That reminds me I need to right down some serial numbers down so if anyone steels my stuff and was found the police will have more to go on. I hope your insurance will cover that.

Firstly I'd like to thank yous guys for your moral support.
When you spend the day thinking that someone got into your home, that's also disgusting. They vioalted your private life. pfftt...

Well, yes, the bright side maybe a 10D. MkII is very hard to find here in Belgium or sometimes at a highly expensive prices ( $5500 equiv.) and even in Germany where it's not available before october.

Sorry for you, mikeg. After reading the post about the Vancouver, Canada
visitor who has his camera gear stolen right out of his locked trunk and this one, you realize nothing is safe today.

Man, that's terrible. Especially stolen from inside your home. I guess I'm going to have to clear a spot in the gun safe for photographic equipment.

I hope you can recover all your equipment, or at least get it replaced!

Mike, I am very sorry to hear your news. It really annoys me that some people feel they have a right make off with things that others have worked so hard to obtain. I wish only bad things upon those who did this.

Was that all they took. The way you say "they came into my house..." makes it seem like someone just walked in and took it. Were your doors locked :). I know a lot of people who dont lock their doors who live out in the country. Very stupid IMO.

If your doors were locked, and they broke in I'm sorry :( and hope the saying what goes around comes around holds true.

Three years ago ago all my camera gear got stolen. One dark rainy night I went to collect my daughter from the airport, came back and saw the window wide open, curtains flapping in the wind. Somebody had got in and grabbed what he could - my camera bag which had been packed for a trip abroad the next day (with tickets, passport etc.) and some minor items.
The police took fingerprints and actually got the guy, apparently the culprit was a drug addict and sold my camera bag for £20 to somebody in the street.
At that time I was not insured, and so I am still collecting lenses.
The camera stuff gone - that really hurts. And from then on you are aware of the fact that it can happen anytime.

You mean even though they caught the guy you still had to pay for your stuff? Can't you press charges or something. Thats kinda of stupid that you still ended up having to pay. I have found out his information some how and gone to his place and take out DOUBLE the damage on his CAR with a BAT :)

First off, lemme send my condolences.

Second, I think it's only us photographers that would see this kind of thing as serious as a family emergency or something of the sort. Hehe.

How would you go about getting insured?

DeeplyDigital

AzzKicker, that's kind of what I felt like doing, but they caught him weeks
later when I had emotionally recovered.

That experience taught me never to be relaxed about my camera, I take my 10D almost everywhere.
And I am ready to defend it and myself with it...

Unless you are a professional you can insure it with your other belongings - here it is called house contents insurance.

Insurance for professional photographer's gear seems to be more expensive.

from dictionary.com
professional
A person following a profession, especially a learned profession.
One who earns a living in a given or implied occupation: hired a professional to decorate the house.
A skilled practitioner; an expert.

We were in the house so doors weren't locked :?

After a few days, I realize how much they were stupid :
Not all my photo gear wasn't in the bag : 550ex was on a small table next to the 420. They've only taken the biggest !
My st-e2 was next to the camera. I guess they didn't know what it is so they left it ...

Typical small-time burglers will take only the stuff that they know they can sell off quickly. Keep an eye on local pawn shops - if you spot your stuff, call the cops immediately (if they're selling it extremely cheap, you might just prefer to buy it back rather than go through the legal hassles).

That's odd. Where I'm from, we lock the doors when we are in the house, especially. They are always locked, regardless (and in case you are wondering, we have a very large, agressive dog). You were extremely fortunate that you didn't end up confronting/surprising the thief. Lots of small-timers are carrying weapons, and when surprised, can do very stupid things.

One of the most dangerous situations in home invasion is to find the owners at home unexpectedly. Dangerous -- for both parties. Most small-timers prefer to break in during daylight hours, when they figure the owners are away at work. Druggies, though, are liable to try anything at anytime -- they aren't thinking straight.

Homeowner's insurance will cover valuables contained within the domicile, at least in the USA. It is interesting though, what constitutes your domicle. When away on a trip, frequently your hotel or stateroom counts as well. Check with your agent, now, before you have a loss.

If you are a professional and make a living with your eqiupment, you usually need an articles floater of some sort. In any event, if you a professional and don't have your equipment covered, you need a reality check.

And to the guy that said that he was ready to defend his 10D, what are you, nuts? Is your life only worth a 10D, for Pete's sake? Just let the guy have it, and count yourself lucky you lived through the experience.

Or buy another one for the camera equipment. ;)
