View Full Version : how about some sample 580/430/220EX flashed photos?

i just got my 580EX II and was wondering if you guys can show some sample shots taken with Canon's EX series flash units (by itself, bounced/diffused/off-camera but not multiple-strobe/studio setups). was surprised that we have lens achive photos in the other forum but not strobed photos here. i've seen great pics (especially fill-in flash & stop-action) in Canon's flash brochures/adverts but would really like to see some here.

p/s: am currently dutifully "studying" photonote's "Flash photography with Canon EOS cameras" guide but would like to see some pics for a change...

Yeah, what's the power of the 220ex vs 430ex compared to the stock flash ?

Here's two. The first is from a wedding, where I just nuked the ceiling in E-TTL mode every shot, for that nice "massive overhead light-source" look, and the second one is basically the exact opposite, bare flash held right beside someone's head, also in E-TTL mode.

I'm no pro, but sometimes I'm amazed at what a little bounce flash can do.

Shot on my 10D before I sold it, using a Sigma Super. I just got a 430EX recently.

They were actually sitting in a church pew there, between parts of the ceremony. The ceiling in there ranged from normal to pretty high, but it was apparently always within reach of my flash. The next one I'm doing, the ceiling is _wayyy_ up there, so I'm gonna have to set up some off-camera lights...

Oh, and as for the second one not looking like flash was used, you'd take that back if you saw a 100% crop of the eye. You can pretty nicely make out me with the camera, holding the flash to the side with the Off-shoe-cord.

vermin, thats the kind of flash pic i always wanted - subtle/natural to the point of being mistaken for a non-flash pic!

Thanks, being surrounded by white walls and a low white ceiling help a lot. Try doing flash photography in a dark ceiling room with the walls obstructed...so irritating!

thanks guys, im inspired by your shots. i do see a light source on the eye but i meant the skin tone is so natural as tho no artificial lighting was used. the same for the naughty-boy-teasing-girl pic, reminds me of pics i see in mag articles which were enactments shot in studio conditions! im playing with bounce flash too but havent found a sweet spot yet (precise angle of reflection to use etc). practice practice practice......

430EX with a homemade bouncer/diffuser that used to work charms... I cannot find it anymore, how sad.

Edit: oh yea, flash was attached to cam.

Well what ya know, it was in my photobucket account.

This was made completely by scratch with a bunch of white cue/flash cards taped and cut together. The top flap was adjustable so it could be all the way down, or straight like the rest of it and the same goes for the flap in front of the flash head at the bottom. It could also have a stofen diffuser attached to it to even more soften the light...it just fit on and off the unit.

That particular picture was taken with the flash head attached to body at 60* and the actual body of the camera was also at 60* down.

What does 'bump' mean?

its just a filler for a message. In order to "Up" or "Bump" the threads so they get to the top of the list, someone needs to post something in it. Bump is just another word to "up" the thread.

Chris, package your DIYed diffuser in a box with that pic as the front label and bet you they'll sell like hotcakes :D
btw you use the 50mm for that shot? thats razor sharp!

A portrait for a friend with a mix of bounced flash from 580EX and natural light from a small window. Not ideal conditions (jammed in a stairwell) but I find using a remote for the flash gives me a lot of flexibility.

All but one of these (http://www.pbase.com/madawson/time_spent_indoors) were taken with flash indoors (most are bounced, a couple are direct).
Some more indoor shots:

And a few outdoor shots (all direct):

Flash for wildlife (zoo pic):

All of these were with the 430EX. Can you tell I like flash?

love the little girl on the beach pic!
for daylight shooting, do you have to select high-speed sync mode or E-TTL II automatically used it?

Thanks.

You have to enable HSS even if using ETTL. Once you enable it anytime your shutter speed is above sync speed it will use HSS.

ok thanks! can't believe i actually went w/o flash for such a long time, and ironically its the daylight shots which suffered most!

Yup. That is exactly what my problem was. I take most of my shots outdoor during daylight hours and I suffered from really bad shadows. The flash has become one of my most used pieces of equipment. It has also been the only one that has required service.

Thanks Artboy. Yeah, my 50mm 1.4 is an awesome lens, I love it.

theres someone selling foam diy diffusers in the sell thread. Check it out. I made one myself, practically the same design and it cost less than $10 USD
