using the the 580 with a 420

i have a speedlite 580 and 420. when i use them together with them together with the 580 as the master, the 420 seems to over power the 580. It's as if it's always on max power.

what do i need to do to have an equal amount of light from both flashes?

Is your analysis based on picture results or observation of the flash?

Are they in ETTL mode?

Ratios will control the power relative to the master. Ratios are controlled by a physical switch on the flash.

If you want master and slave the same the ratio is 1:1.
