Since when does a company discontinue a model and leave itself a six-month window until the replacement product is available for sale?

Since Canon did that exact same thing with the 1D to MkII "transition"
For about 5 months the used 1D bodies were so hard toi find that the prices kept bouncing up and down like a basketball!

This is weird........
I had a talk with a pro-photographer at work and he told me that there will be no 10D replacement...........only a 1Ds........
I of course did not believe a word he said...........though he seemed pretty convinced.
In any case.................Maybe he's wrong...........maybe he's right.......
It doesn't really matter..
Oh.........and he was a N*k*n-ese.

For some reason I find this scenario more logical.
However the original poster was talking about 1Ds

http://www.koelnmesse.de/wEnglisch/photokina/ is around the corner, we should know if there is a 10d replacement in planning after the event...i hope so, id like to upgrade my 300d when i get to know what i am doing, but for the price range i can afford, i dont think the 10d is really worth it...i mean i could use the extra functions, but id like a better AF system or something really nice added to it...
oh well...lots to learn int he meantime :D

Maybe you shouldn't have revealed that your source is Jessops
Might make the rumor somehow less credible now, from all I've heard ...
Best regards,

I do know from a well known (but remining un-named) wildlife photographer that the next canon is the 1Ds MKII
But then again I said that here a month and a half ago ;)

Well, i know Jessops hasn't got the best reputations around, and i'm not trying to defend them in anyway, however, the next day, Canon people came in with a new shipment, including 1D MK II ... I could have got one if i had the money...

(I can't believe I am doing this...)
OK, Jessops are not very efficient (ordering things through them often takes longer than ordering from the supplier direct), as a company they don't have a decent stock distribution mechanism and their staff lack knowledge sometimes...
HOWEVER... they are honest and reasonably priced for a high street chain hence they serve a useful purpose. A few years back the only high street camera shops were local outfits, sure the staff were knowledgeable enthusiasts but you sure paid a premium for that knowledge.

ROTFLMAO!
More often than not the only time they are "reasonably priced" is when they do a price match to get a sale over a competitor.
If their prices were reasonable and realistic they wouldn't have to offer a price match at all - as the largest photo dealer chain by a very long way in the UK they have enormous purchasing power, which means that they "ought" to be able to negotiate very competitive prices from suppliers and could then charge uninflated prices that would beat the competition without customers needing to ask for a price match to achieve it.

I agree, i'd love to see something like 5 fps with at least a 15 shot buffer. The difference is only a few fps, but 3 vs 5....would be nice thats all i can say.
Also, other then ETTL 2 what else could they do to the 1ds that they didnt do to the MK II?
I dunno....

Canon's gotta have at least one dSLR between the dRebel and the 1DMII. I am hoping for a EOS-3 based camera around $2000-2500. They'll wait until 1DMII sales stagnate before they announce it, though.

Maybe, just maybe, there will be a camera between the 10D and the 1D-II. Maybe something with a "3" in its name? There's certainly a gap in the lineup, and what better way to bring out new stuff while keeping two great winners in the lineup (the D-reb and the 10D)?

Well, perhaps we should only anticipate a 1DsMkII at Photokina. The 10D refresh could come at PMA next year. Holding off on a new 10D might help keep sales strong on the 1DMkII.

I think that it is time we abandoned these offensive terms!
They should be refered to as 'brand challenged photographers' and we should make every effort not to treat them with pity. They often produce great photographs despite their handicaps.
You should also resist the temptation to point and laugh at their 'alternative brand' equipment, not everyone can be blessed with the ability to identify and purchase the best performing brand.

Yes, you often see their precious little faces pressed to the windows of our little forum.
The sadest ones are those that waited till the D2H was released and bought that, happy to have a camera to rival the mighty 1D that they secretly wished they owned. Then Canon released the 1D MkII. There are not enough tissues in the world to wipe away all the tears from the eyes of the poor unfortunate brand challenged sports photographers.

Ouch ... you have hit them where it hurt the most .... the D2H. Wthis camera was only 3 years late!!. Well, let us be fair, the d70 is a very good contender .... or i should say would be a good contender if you can put L lens on it!! ;)

The 1Ds is NOT discontinued, there will be NO Mk2 version this year.
There will be NO EOS3 digital and the 1DMk2 sales will not stagnate in the foreseeable future.
What does that leave for Photokina? A black 300D/Rebel for Europe and the US; a cut priced, cut down 300D to compete with the recently announced budget Pentax D*ist and/or the much rumoured 10D update/replacement.
I know where my bets get placed!

can you be sure there will not be a 1Ds MKII ?
If it is announced later this year then it will not be available for some time anyway.
Which camera is older and due a replacement, the 1Ds or the 10D?
But then again it is all rumours, and some are more factual than others. but to say with absolute certainty that something isn't going to happen without fact is a bit silly.
And I trust my source of info enough to put hard cash on a bet.

my bet is going to be on 1Ds II with 16million.. fast big buffer...
internal memory writing... saving on all those CF cards.. full frame.. low ISO noise.. fast image writing to CF.... improved colours.... more frames per second and maybe. ...just maybe.... WiFi image transfer..
all at the same price of current 1Ds.....
cant wait till... xmas...
