I told everyone an update would be soon. :D And you will not be dissapointed when you get it, it looks amazing. When you throw in the fact that this is Volume 1, it is simply unmatched.
Thanks to Scott for finishing up the book. I know he had a lot of other engagements but still he managed to complete the project without sacrificing quality.

Could you post this Sticky in each of the POTN Forum Sections?
I ordered my books 10 hours ago... Shipping for two books using UPS 2nd Day Air was only $11. and change...
On another note:
The only problem I had was with the address... Had to use a different address for shipping and billing... Everything is the same except for billing.... my mail must go to the USPS box... And books are not delivered to PO Boxers... (I say must, because we (over private community 2500 residents) get free mail boxes at the PO, because mail isn't delivered here...) Therefore, just add an actual street address for UPS shipping, and PO Box for billing, and all works out just fine...

How long does it take the book to ship? Are they already made, or do they print them based on the number of orders are received? There was something on the Blurb web site about allowing a certain number of days for them to be published before they can be shipped.
Scottes
8th of August 2007 (Wed), 10:12
Every time I've ordered from them it's taken about 2 weeks before I receive them. I think they take about 10 days before your copy is actually printed. I suspect some countries may take longer due to international shipping & customs.
Scottes
8th of August 2007 (Wed), 10:14
As a note, the ordering page has been visited 204 times in 36 hours. This does not indicate sales really, since some people don't order and some have ordered multiple copies. I plan on asking Blurb to see if we can get a count of the number of copies sold, and get it on a somewhat regular basis.

Thanks all for your effort of the last year (almost!) getting this from a suggestion to a reality.
Michael. We did a bunch of research on adding these to the POTN store, and it would actually wind up being more expensive for most people than buying straight from Blurb, mainly because of the extra shipping from Blurb to me ($3-4 per book in bulk), plus Paypal fees, boxes, etc. It would be at least $25 on top of the price of the book to most countries outside of the US & Canada because of all the fees.
We'll probably add them there at some point for people that want to buy additional items and combine the shipping, and for members in countries that Blurb does not ship to. PM me if you are in a country that Blurb does not ship too, and if there is enough of a need we'll get a bunch and add them to the POTN shop.

does that mean vol 2 needs to be bigger? :o
Scottes
9th of August 2007 (Thu), 10:38
It's always an option, and something to consider after people have viewed Vol 1 and voiced their opinions. In many ways I like the layout of Vol 1, but wish the photos where larger. But if every page was the size of a SigShot we wouldn't have room for text, and we'd lose the "specialness" of having a SigShot. Or maybe Blurb/etc will come out with a larger size that's reasonably priced. And we always have the option to add more pages if people are generally willing to pay a little extra.
Lots of options. We'll just have to wait and see...

The profit margin of an art book varies so much by several variables, including price, quality, # printed, and customer base...
Having owned a few book stores in Manhattan and Queens, NYC... the sale of these art books varied greatly by store location...
It wasn't profitable to sell them anywhere but in our signature stores on the upper east side of Manhattan (corner of Lexington Ave. & 62nd St.)... That's where the customer base showed interest in Art and Photography hardcover books... and enough sales were generated to enable the stores to carry the product in inventory on a regular basis for over 30 years...
The $40 price tag for this small 1st printing issue, doesn't leave much room for profit... If you go national, international, and distribution takes you to the appropriate clientèle, there might be potential for increasing the price and obtaining a profit margin...
For comparison, I just won a hardcover book on photography, in a photo contest... It retails for over $80... Art and photography hardcover books cost a lot to print and are priced accordingly...
Wedding photography is a big seller in the periodicals environment... The idea has merit and deserves some consideration... Let's see what is on the horizon for our new book idea...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong... I think at one point we were thinking of using the book as a way to raise funds for the forum, but Pekka didn't want to use the book for fundraising. So we dropped that idea and the book is priced at the absolute lowest price possible; that being the blurb printing cost. Again, someone can correct me if I'm wrong; of the almost 8000 posts amongst the book staff, I may have misunderstood :o
It might be of your benefit to buy the book. The images inspire me to try new things and better myself as a photographer. It might do the same for you.
I know I'm not the 'you', but that is so true. It's already helped me. I'm going to be trying some new (to me) subjects this weekend, and seeing related photos in the book with the exif info has given me a head start :)

WOW $39.95 for the book $50 for shipping, sorry POTN but thats rediculous...
Sorry, but it really has nothing to do with anyone at POTN, really. We picked the best company that gave the best quality at the right price. Many of the other printing companies we looked into were just as bad - some had better shipping prices, and some had worse, but overall they were just as expensive on average. Some companies didn't even ship to Australia at all. Blurb had the best coverage to get books to as many people as possible.
It will be a bit cheaper to ship from the Shop - please PM pcasciola, the shop keeper. Or perhaps get together with some other Aussies and do a group buy, since bulk shipping will be much cheaper than one at a time.

lucky for me i just realised dad is there atm so will have it sent to him.The books are more like 1kg (2+ pounds) which is $16-20 in actual USPS postage alone using their least expensive service. B&H is making $1000+ profit on most 5kg lenses, so I'm sure they are willing to lose $10-20 on shipping.
If a lot of people end up in this high shipping range of $40-50, I can definitely do better than that through the POTN shop, but adding it all up it will still be high.
$16-20 for postage (assuming 2 to 2-1/2 lb to most countries including Australia and NZ)
$3-4 from Blurb to me
$2-3 in Paypal/credit card fees
$2-3 for boxes and foam wrap
That's $23-30 per book, but I'm willing to do it through the POTN shop if enough people are getting overcharged on shipping.

If the POTN admins are happy to do this, i just worked out shipping 20 books comes to about $8 USD shipping each to me, if admins are happy to put an official post up stating australian customers can pay me directly i can order in bulk then ship it out to them, total cost would be $47 - $51 USD or $56 - $61 AUD (need to make sure blurb honor the 10% bulk discount as it didnt come up in the cart) shipping to their door vs $70 + USD through blurb, but i would only do it if people paid upfront.

When will they be available in the POTN shop?
Send a PM ti pcasciola. It will most likely only be available via the POTN shop for those where shipping from Blurb is too expensive. That means for countries like Australia, Phil posted about this yesterday he made some calculations and for everybody else it would be to expensive via him rather than direct from Blurb. So I think you are left with 2 alternatives, 1 get somebody else to order it from Blurb and send it to you or order it yourself from Blurb.
See this post from Phil. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3702961&postcount=58)

Tracking # usually means it's packed and ready to fly (shipper has been notified)...or better yet, it's on it's way...
Not the same for me... I ordered two books at 6AM, August 7... I was of the opinion that it was one of the very first orders going in...
Paid extra for 2nd day air...at time of order, their web page indicated 5 to 6 days to print the book...
My order status is still pending, with an estimated shipping date of August 15th...
So maybe as another poster stated, don't rely on the pending info., cause he already got the book...
In the mean time, I checked my credit card and the charge is still pending... Usually, almost always, the card is charged at the time of shipping... So, we wait...
Good luck with your book James... and enjoy your fantastic photo in it... :D

Here's some potential good news regarding books in the POTN shop. Scottes gets a 10% discount for buying 10 or more books, so that at least cancels out the shipping from Blurb to me, bringing the total down to around $19-25 per book. I'm going to go ahead and order 10. If I can keep the total shipped weight around 2 pounds, I should be able to keep it close to $59.95 shipped anywhere outside of the U.S. and Canada which should help the Australian and N.Z. members at least.

Any chance of it being made available on Amazon?
The shipping costs outside the US are disproportionately high. I know the majority of members here are from the US but there are significant members who aren't and they seem to have been neglected.
If the US dollar wasn't so week right now it would have been much worse.

No. The book does not have an ISBN number so it will only be available through Blurb, and now possibly the POTN Shop.

Any posibility to add an ISBN? Would that make it avaible at large bookstores such as barnes and nobles, borders and amazon just to name a few.
That would also give the book tremendous exposure. How is for a slogan...:)

The problem with adding an ISBN number is that the book can now be sold for profit. Again, where does the money go? It would also have required model releases.

Why is this a problem? Once you've paid off your expenses donate it all to charities.

Donating for charities was discussed at length and dropped because we will never ever be able to agree on which charities to donate to. I for example refuse to donate to charities where the majority of money is used for administration.

As to your second. If the book was sold for profit it would have required a written authorization from any individual, whom was visible in the book, to have their picture displayed.

refer above, it would be cheaper for me to have the book shipped to someoen in the US and ask them to ship it regular mail for me.
There are so many international users here and to have to pay almost double the cost of the book isnt great

I thought a model release was a requirement for submitting "people" shots in the first place. So, we already have them, don't we?
I didn't submit any photos to those sections, so I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered reading that in the rules all those months ago.

Initially they were going to be required so we made people have them. But in the end they were not required because the book is more photo journalistic (I think that was the correct term).

As a suggestion for the next volume, how much more work would it be to use different companies in different countries?
I am probably being very naïve but presumably there will be printers in Australia etc. that would be able to use the same files, or ones with very little adjustment, to Blurb be able to make it available locally rather than picking one printer for the whole world?

It requires a lot of extra work because it would essentially mean layouting 2 completely different books because each printer user their own custom software.
I highly doubt more than one printing company will be used.

I'm not so sure that every country has such a company. But then again we just need a few other countries that would ship at reasonable rates. But we found only 4 or 5 companies that did this sort of thing at reasonable cost, and 3 were in the US. (+1 Netherlands, +1 Germany)
By all means, please look for some other possible companies and PM me anything that you find. I'd love to know. I did a lot of searching when we started this, and I could not possibly have found every single company that did this. Note the criteria: Quality, 160 pages for US$40, and print-on-demand. If you find anything please let me know.
But even still, I very highly doubt that any other company uses the same software, but...
...it may be possible to use a more portable format.
Note that we did A LOT of work this time using Photoshop to produce templates. It was way too much work. We are asking Blurb to change their software to add our page layouts. This would save - I'm not kidding here - well over 100 hours of work that the book folks did in Photoshop. And I, personally, do not look forward to doing that work again.
Now, if some other lunatic would volunteer to do what I did then perhaps we could stick with Photoshop. But anyone insane enough to volunteer for that job would not be trustworthy enough to actually finish it. It was painful, and I almost did not finish it. Believe me, I did not want to, but I did.
We are open to suggestions and improvements. Please PM either myself and/or EOSAddict.

People keep asking how many have been sold. Well, I don't really know exactly yet and I'm still waiting for an official answer. The problem is that although the book sales page automatically kept track of how many visits it got, I did not enable sales tracking until last Friday at 11:00 AM.
When I enabled order tracking, the page had gotten just about exactly 300 visits in 3.5 days. Since then the page has gotten another 80 hits which resulted in sales of 35 books. So if you figure that (almost) every other visit resulted in the sale of 1 book, then we've sold about 150-160 copies.
But I really don't know for sure. But I hope that Blurb will answer my email one of these days, if they can even tell.

I could provide a list of L glasses I want...starting with the 1200 telephoto ...:)
OK, kidding aside we can start thinking about that. We would probably start requesting model releases for the people sections so we are legal or any other legal requirements. Once that step is done -- if not then is a no go.
For royalties, distribute an even amount to every photo on the book. so for the sake of this idea. We sell 160 books with a one dollar net profit. Then a photographer with 4 published photos gets $4 bucks minus s/h.
I would also keep a portion of profits to keep this great site up and runnning.
