I've owned a 430EX for some time now. Never gave much thought to it and used it rarely, relying instead on the pop-up flash on the 20D. I built a macro setup and, with an off shoe extension cord, put the 430 to work there. Then I bought a 5D and started giving the whole flash thing a lot more thought. In some pretty harsh ambient sunlight I took some group shots at a reunion. Shadows in the wrong places really wiped out some of the faces I would loved to have captured. I learned the hard way that I needed to give more thought to fill flash, and in keeping a flash handy for the 5d in those situations. When a 550EX in almost new condition showed up at a reasonable price I bought it. About the only thing that I knew different from the 430EX was that this flash could master others and that its guide number indicated more light output. Still in all of this I was flying blind (meaning I really didn't know a TTL from an A-TTL or an E-TTL from an E-TTL-II). I did know to set the 430 to E-TTL and didn't give its use any further thought as pictures turned out pretty well.
I dropped in on this part of the forums to learn a little bit more and have to say that the sticky on EOS Flash Photography is simply outstanding. By shear luck, both of these are wonderfully capable devices and as good as you can get for integrating with both of my cameras. Thanks to those who contributed to those stickies in this area. Nice to be a little less ignorant going forward.
