Hello... first post.

I see lots of people spend time trying to smooth out skin etc on portraits. I'd like to know any tips for getting the really heavy textured skin where you can see all the pores, pock marks, stray hairs etc. Especially relating to B&W images.

I'm not sure if this is a PP issue or a lighting setup issue. any thought or tips appreciated.

Proper lighting can help you in showing the details of the skin. The way I read your post is that you want to show these things. The key to this is to make sure that your lighting is creating shadows in the blemishes of the skin and it will reduce the requirement for heavy PP. It takes some practice to get this the way you want it but the key here is practice practice practice.

I'm not sure how heavy you want to display this in your images. I would search for an effect called grunge if you want it real heavy. I've seen some great work by people using this effect to display the blemishes and wrinkles in persons facial features.
