The automatic settings work great with my 50mm lense. However, when I use a zoom the automatic settings do not adjust the speed (i.e. still at 1/60 or 1/90 exposure time) - the greater the zoom the softer/fuzzer the picture. It would be nice if using a 100mm lense (or equivelent zoom) the speed was 1/150 or 1/200 second (obviously the f-stop and/or the ISO setting would need to change).
I am using maunal setting when zooming, but my wife will only use the automatic settings.
Is there any way to have the automatic setting compensate?

What model of lens are you using?

Program mode is very similar to auto. One advantage of P mode is that you can use the wheel to toggle shutter/aperture values, keeping the same exposure. See if she likes that.

The short answer is "No", the automatic modes will not compensate for focal length.
The easiest way is to put it in Tv mode at the minimum shutter speed you will need (If you're using a XX-100mm lens, then say, 1/100).

It just seemed reasonable that the focal length would be adjusted for in automatic modes. Otherwise, automatic mode is a joke at the longer lengths.
Suggestion that Canon make this a future enhancement.

Is that true that the camera doesn't compensate. On my old EOS 600 in P mode it would look to get the shutter speed at least above the focal length before closing down the aperture. I haven't read checked the 10D's manual to see if it does the same but I would ahve thought it would, even if they don't put compensation for the magnification factor in.

Typically, it'll resort to using the built-in Flash at 1/60 and an appropriate aperture before the camera drops below 1/60. This is for the automatic modes.
