I just bought a Canon Digital Rebel. I would like to add my name to Owner's Name on the firmware. So that every photo Exif will have the name. Is this possible?

You can get to the name entry through ZoomBrowser.

Connect the camera to the computer and in FileViewerUtility, choose File / Camera Settings. There you can set the owner's name, the date and time in the camera and format the memory card.

Is there a way to protect this information ? (like a serial number ). It makes no sence, when everyone is able to change it. I would like to protect it f.e. by pwd. So noone except me could change it to proove, that the camera is mine...

No it cannot be protected. I could take your photo, and using the right software, put anyone's name in place of yours. That's where watermarking comes into play. There are several -- some not cheap -- ways to accomplish that.

Jim, I don't know if CGNKlaus meant he wanted to protect his photos, or his camera - so that when the camera is stolen, the thief can't change the name in the camera and he could show that it was his camera if the police would catch the thief.

But no, it's also not possible to protect the name in the camera with a password. Still, setting your name in the camera is a good idea, the thief would have to be smart enough to know how to set the name.

You camera does have a unique serial number, which is printed on the label on the bottom of the camera and which is also saved along with each photo. That serial number should also be on your warranty card. Probably the insurance company also wants to know the serial number if you want to insure your camera. Write it down on a piece of paper and keep it in a safe place.

When you set the name in the camera, your name will also be saved in the EXIF information in each photo that you take. You can see it in Windows by right-clicking on the JPEG file, choose Properties, Summary and click the Advanced button. For RAW files, the RAW converter software usually shows the information somewhere.

I set the owner name on my camera the day I bought it...My name is on none of my photosin the EXIF info. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Erick, what software are you using to view the EXIF data?

Some software shows all of it, some shows part of it, and some shows none.

The venerable Canon ZoomBrowser, despite its weaknesses, does show the data, but it shows it separately from the actual image.

If you open an image in Canon Digital Camera file viewer all the info including your name appears along side the image. In Zoombrowser click on properties and the same info is shown.

I was refering to Jesper saying that is was viewable in Windows. I didn't see it there. Thanks for the info about the canon software tho.

Strange.... in Windows XP, there is an "Author" field (on the bottom) but it's empty, even though I do have my name set in my camera (10D). I also checked in the File Browser of Photoshop CS. For JPEG files, the "Author" field is empty, but for RAW files my name is there!!

Canon EOS Viewer Utility does show my name for both JPEG and RAW files.

Something strange going on.... looks like the camera is saving my name in a non-standard field??

Welcome to the wonderful world of EXIF data! Nothing is quite consistent.

Jesper-

Look further down in the EXIF data. You encounter the "artist" field first, but the owner name is the last entry.

I also put my phone number with the name, so if it would be recovered by someone honest , they can call me.

Now if only I can find some utility to batch process exif for artist name and description....!

OK I have a problem here. I tried to do the above and I keep getting and error that states not supported camera.

I am using ZoomBrowser EX V5.7.0.74 and the firmware on the camera is 1.1.1.

It is a digital rebel and ZoomBrowser pops up when I connect the USB cable to the camera. Should I try to reset all the settings on the camera to default then try?

I am trying under the icon "Aquire & Camera Settings". Is this the correct spot?

Thanks,

Kevin

That would be the right spot, but you may need to upgrade to Eos Utilities; Canon may have changed the functionality for ZB once they released Eos Utilities.

That you Sir. That worked. Still playing with the software some. I have always just took pictures and then uploaded to the computer. I am finding there is more stuff than that. Thank You for your time.

Kevin.

I thought that I used EOS Utility to record my name if I am not mistaken.

Instead of entering your name, you could enter something like a drivers license number along with your initials that might not be recognized as as a name. The great majority of people would not even know about EXIF data nor have any idea how to change anything anyway. Chances of recovering stolen equipment are slim to none no matter what is done to somehow ID it.
