Taken as the GBH flew over the bow of the boat.

Here he is sticking his tongue out at me....he probably knew I missed the focus point :)

Well I think you got sharp focus on the first one...the head and especially the eye are crystal clear. The second one with the tongue is appropriate with your caption. Nice work.

Thanks Ed, Gary & Jim....yes, it was very close, probably about 25' tops (these are about 30% crops)! The interesting thing is the perspective as I was actually looking down at him, which is unusual for a GBH in flight. I know you aren't supposed to be standing up in a boat, but I'm glad I did :D

Thanks Mitch....I like your new avatar, but please don't tell me you took the shot in your back yard :)

Thanks Erik....I'm assuming the beak may be indicative of an older age for the bird but I'm not sure.

Two nice pictures, but number one is very nice, it's right place at the right time.

Thanks khall.....my biggest problem is that I haven't figured out how to be in the right place at the right time very often :)

Ha, no. Last winter. I put it back up to remind me of this coming winter and to stave off the withdrawl symptoms. Most of our eagles are gone in summer. ;)

Love those shots! New to the forum, but I'm glad to see there are locals frequenting the site (I'm in Toronto, used to be in Pickering).
A little off topic here, but are there any Durham photo clubs, or photo-meets in the area? Shoot me a PM if I should be looking somewhere for that info? Thanks!

Hi Ryan and a warm welcome to POTN. Its a great place to hang around and help you become a better photographer. I'm not in any local clubs however I'm sure there must be some in the area. There are a number of POTN members in the GTA and from time to time someone will organize an informal get together. If ever I hear of anything specific I'll let you know.
Keep posting :)

Scott I love the first shot. It's a perspective that you don't often see in a GBH flight shot.

That 1st shot is AWESOME!!!! Were you using the 400L for these? I have had this lens for a short time now, and i have found that the focus is so fast with it that it is easy to get just a bit off focus, not that i am complaining :)

Yes Dustin these were taken with the 400, and although I can't recall the exposure settings, most likely at f/5.6 and ~1/2000
I've been more than happy with the lens and yes it has extremely fast AF. You can have some focus issues, most notably in AI Servo. Actually the two shots in this series are a good example as both shots were taken in the same 'burst' and one is very sharp while the other is notably soft. When I get soft shots I always blame myself though as I like the lens too much to blame the technology :)
