what are they really for?

Prevents lens flare.
Most of the time, yeah. Makes it look cool :D

haha...yeah, it like 12 noon no cloud bright blue sky/sun type situations, its awesome to have one, but man...like on my 70-200 with no hood, people are like "thats a big lense" but then i snap the hood on there, "HOLY $^#&% thats a weapon of mass distruction or something"...haha...heard that a few times today actually...
just funny, they do keep that flare and picture bake out pretty well when the sun is cookin down on ya...

The hood works really well to improve contrast and prevent flare.
In addition for those of us who dont use UV filters, they offer great protection for the lens.
I always use the hoods on my lenses.

While we are on the subject of hoods, is there a notched hood for the 70-200 F/4L?
