Just wondering if anyone else would support an Astronomy Section in the 'Photo Sharing' section.

I know we have enough forums as it is, it's just that I think it would be great to have a specialised forum for astro shots.
All the moon, stars, Milky Way, International Space Station, Planet shots could be under this heading, making it easier to find them, instead of being 'lost' within the "Travel and Landscape" or "Nature and Animals" sections.

Advice could be offered by other amateurs to those that are interested to learn how to use their DSLRs for astro and it would help those who aren't interested by not cluttering up the other forums.

Just a thought.......

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind with future planning. Creating a new forum requires a lot of specific genre shooters posting a LOT and daily, though. With smaller (but not less interesting or less visible) genres it is usually best to start with a thread which invites people to post images, if that gets on a long time it might become a sticky and so on.

I agree with Dusty about their being an astronomy specific forum, but in the mean time I've added to dusty's thread in Nature and Animals.

I like the sound of an astronomy section and love looking at photos of our cosmos. It would get a thumbs up from me.

Although, as Pekka said, there would have to be plenty of posters to keep it alive.

Nature & Animals (29 Viewing)
Flowers, trees, fish, bugs, dogs, cats, spiders, astronomy and hippogriffs.

Perhaps just add to the description of the category.

Don't forget that some post in the landscape section (say of the setting moon or star trails).
Also it would make it easier if you're specifically looking for astro images taken with a DSLR to have these grouped in their own section.

Canon DSLRs are market leaders when it comes to astro users, they are the most popular DSLR used for astro.
Also having a section on astro would allow for discussion on this equipment.
It would make it easier to browse the astro section and find topics rather than the threads being lost in the other sections of POTN.

People browsing the astro section might spark an interest they never new they had and can try their hand at it since they already have a DSLR.

Anyway I think it would open yet another aspect to photography and expand POTN's braod range of topics.

I'm in favour of an astronomical images section too (in case you were wondering ;)).

My hand is raised as well! I've tried pointing my Canon at the stars and have been dissapointed with what I got...:(

Searching for threads has been cumbersome and slow at best.

Would love to have a forum where we can discuss technique, equipment, sources and images.

I read of some techniques (not always here) and am anxious to try them out, and then share the images here for C&C!

I vote YES!

ps: it's a great idea to place a link in your sig to this thread...

YES YES YES YES. I've only tried it a time or two, and have lost all inspiration until I saw what others have put on here. I want to be able to do what they can do. I want to see the red and green gasses around galaxies and such. Make this a section so that the pros can teach us novice shooters how i'ts done.

Dusty's started an Astronomy Photos thread, link in my signature. It nearly always stays on Page 1 of the Nature and Animals forum, so if we can get everyone to post their images and discussions in there then it's a good start.

Raising my hand as well! I would love to have a dedicated place to learn from others and share what (little) I know. I expect there are a lot more people interested in this subject than currently shoot it; a dedicated forum might bring about a groundswell and get more people interested and sharing.

Thank you so much Pekka and the whole POTN Team, we really appreciate your efforts and appreciate having a dedicated Astronomy and Celestial forum.

This will allow not only the sharing of astro related photos but also discussion on equipment, technique and tips, which hopefully will not only inform our current members but also attract new members if they
happen to be searching for such info.

Thank you once again.
