I can see why you took this. The design being made by the mast and the dark rigging is very interesting and the flag with two primary colors against the blue sky which then gives you all three primaries is very nice. I think whats confusing all of that are the sails and the white rigging. Thats not very interesting and competing with the other for your eyes attention.

I think because there is so much going on (lines from the rigging) maybe something close and simpler in this case ( not as busy) is the answer? I can see exactly what you're trying to do with those wonderful angles the rigging and the mast makes its just so much going on. Maybe weed trough and find the heart of the design they are making. Make it simple. ? The first one is more interesting in my opinion and this is how I would see it.
